GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: ROYAL RALLY TAKES IT THOUSAND OAKS SPIKERS CLAIM TOURNAMENT TITLE.

 of La Canada Flintridge and Thousand Oaks both made a habit out of staging impressive rallies and producing incredible comebacks throughout the day at the Royal Tournament.

So when the area girls' volleyball powers finally brushed aside the other 27 teams in the field to meet in Saturday night's championship match, it was only fitting that another come-from-behind victory decided the Gold Division title.

Thousand Oaks, which needed three games to survive the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, was pushed to the limit again in the final. But the Lancers lanc·er

``There were a lot of weird calls, but you just have to play through them,'' said Boden, who had two blocks to rally the Lancers from a 14-12 deficit in the third game against Ayala.

``We just motivated each other and pushed each other to win.''

It was a bittersweet bittersweet, name for two unrelated plants, belonging to different families, both fall-fruiting woody vines sometimes cultivated for their decorative scarlet berries.  ending to an otherwise impressive 12-hour day for Flintridge Sacred Heart (12-3), which had its nine-match winning streak snapped. Junior setter Samantha Orlandini, who finished with 141 assists and 50 digs -- including 34 assists and 10 digs in the final -- and junior outside hitter Katie Condon (51 kills) earned all-tournament recognition for the Tologs.

``The way they came back against Oxnard (in the semifinals) and again in the final was great,'' said Tologs coach Shelli Orlandini, whose team held a 10-7 lead in the third game against Thousand Oaks.

``We never gave up and we kept fighting. We just made some hitting errors at the wrong time.''

La Canada beat Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta 25-18 to win the Silver Division title.
