GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: GENE'S TEAM TESTED EARLY.

Gene's Team entered the U.S. Junior Olympics with the knowledge that nine victories would produce a 17-under Open Division championship.

It didn't take long Sunday for Southern California's top- ranked 17-under girls' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  team to realize there would be no free passes along the way.

Led by Jesse Yeager (Oak Park/Pennsylvania), Cathy Quilico (Westlake) and Thousand Oaks' Tori Boden and Deanna Elias, Gene's Team survived a battle with Indiana's Circle City in its pool-play opener to prevail 25-18, 25-15, 20-25, 12-25, 15-8.

Gene's Team, ranked fourth nationally in the 17-under division by PrepVolleyball.com, then defeated seventh-ranked A5 Mizuno of Georgia 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 27-25 to remain tied atop its seven-team pool with No. 9 Milwaukee Sting.

Fabric, furniture, paper products, tools, and aircraft parts are manufactured.  Roshambo -- featuring six area players -- also began its tournament with two victories, joining 10 others in the 48-team field that remained undefeated.

San Gabriel opened with a 25-16, 25-27, 15-13 victory over Iowa Rockets, followed by a 25-22, 23-25, 15-6 triumph over Ohio's Team Atlantis.
