GIRLS' TRACK PREVIEW; IS IT DEJA VU THIS SEASON? ROYAL, T.O. MAY BE AMONG ELITE OF MARMONTE AGAIN.

The battle between Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  for the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule.  girls' track title last season went down to the wire, with the teams tying for the league championship.

Royal finished 6-0 in dual meets but Thousand Oaks (5-1) earned a share of the league crown after winning the league finals 124-123. The league champion is determined by a combination of league meets and finals.

Royal and Thousand Oaks once again figure to be in the thick of the race for the league title with a large contingent of returners.

The Pacific View League was a two-team battle between Camarillo Camarillo (kă'mərē`yō), city (1990 pop. 52,303), Ventura co., S Calif.; inc. 1964. It is the center of a fertile farm area where citrus fruits and flowers are grown.  and Rio Mesa in the league's inaugural season. Camarillo edged Rio Mesa 123-120 in the league finals to finish 8-0 in league.

Here is a look at teams to watch:

--Agoura: Laura Jakosky, the defending Marmonte League 3,200-meter champion, is coming off her best cross country season, in which she finished sixth in the state Division II finals for the second consecutive season and won Ventura County and Marmonte League titles.

--Camarillo: Senior Lisa Wygant advanced to the state meet in the high jump for the second year in a row last season. In the Pacific League finals, Wygant won the 100 and 300 hurdles, the triple jump and the long jump.

Senior Nicole Richardson, the defending league 3,200-meter champion, and sophomore Marianne Gerry, 1999 league 800 champion, helped the Scorpions win the league cross country title in the fall.

--Newbury Park: Junior Jennifer Turk is among the Marmonte League's top middle-distance runners. In the fall, Turk finished 10th in the Southern Section Division II cross country finals.

 are returning Southern Section preliminary qualifiers. Goddard was the league runner-up in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. York was third in the high jump.

--Rio Mesa: Junior Porchea Carroll was a state finalist in the 100, 200 and long jump last season, posting bests of 11.70, 24.33 and 19-3 1/2. Her mark in the long jump was the best mark in the state in 1999.

--Royal: The Highlanders have a 1-2 punch in the distances with junior Jaclyn Pedersen and sophomore Erin Weesner.

. As a sophomore, she became the first Royal girl to win the Marmonte League cross country title and the school's first Ventura County champion since 1977.

Weesner qualified for the Southern Section Division II 3,200-meter preliminaries as a freshman.

Sophomores Ashley Sims and Jaime Klenck headline Royal's sprints and jumps. Sims posted bests of 12.69 in the 100, 15-10 1/2 in the long jump and 32-5 in the triple jump as a freshman.

Royal is solid in the throws with senior Kelly Smith Kelly Smith (born 29 October 1978 in Watford) is an English football player who currently plays in England for Arsenal Ladies. --Thousand Oaks: Senior sprinter Erin Brzezinski will be the Lancers' workhorse work·horse

As a junior, Brzezinski won the 100 and 200 in the league finals and finished second in the long jump. She will also see duty on both relays.

Junior Kelley Hess won league cross country and 3,200 titles as a freshman. In the fall, she finished seventh in the Southern Section Division I cross country finals.

Hess and sophomore Ashley Patteson, the 1999 league runner-up at 800 meters, were members of Thousand Oaks' cross country team which placed first in the Marmonte League finals.
