GIRLS' TRACK PREVIEW: ON THE RUN : FLESHMAN BACK ON TRACK WITH INDIVIDUAL TITLES.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Lauren Fleshman would be hard-pressed to top her cross country season last fall.

The Canyon High senior won her school's first Southern Section and State Division individual titles, culminating her campaign with a runner-up finish Noun 1. runner-up finish - a finish in second place (as in a race)

Fleshman, though, was unsatisfied with her showing after being slowed by illness as a junior in track last spring, despite a fourth-place finish in the State 3,200-meter final.

``Nothing really came together,'' Fleshman said. ``I never had the opportunity to run to my potential.''

Still, it was hardly a disaster for Fleshman, who was undefeated up to the State championships. In the Southern Section Division I finals, Fleshman won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters for the first Southern Section titles of her career.

Coach Dave DeLong believed her 800-meter performance last year was a premonition for much faster times in the 1,600 and 3,200. He predicts Fleshman, who has taken recruiting trips to Arizona, Stanford, UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

DeLong plans to seek out the State's distance runners to push Fleshman to quality marks in several out-of-the-area competitions. Fleshman will likely go head-to-head with the State 1,600- and 3,200-meter champion Sara Bei of Santa Rosa Santa Rosa, city, Argentina

``Lauren was winning so easily even though she was sick, no one really noticed she was losing her fitness last season,'' DeLong said. ``She never really got a chance to lay it on the line until the State meet. My worry is to be able to find her the competition to (run) five or six good races.''

Led by Fleshman, the Canyon girls are favored to repeat as Foothill League champions. Jasmine Cetrone (800 meters), Kirsten Ricks (200 meters), Emma Barker (triple jump) and Danielle Wenz (pole vault pole vault

Canyon has also been bolstered in the distances by freshman Jasmine Treadway and Barrie Truex, who were members of the Cowboys' league champion and Southern Section Division I-finalist cross country team.

The Canyon boys' field could be the key to repeating as league champion with returning league triple jump champion Derwin Maxwell and pole vault champion Drake Morgan. In cross-country, Luke Llamas posted one of the top 25 times ever by a ninth-grader on the hilly hill·y

Foster, a junior who has a best of 5-8 in the high jump, had a hand in four victories in last year's league finals, winning the high jump, long jump and running on the Vikings' 400- and 1,600-meter relays.

Saugus: Seniors Dan Klawer and Jacob Boeding finished seventh and 11th in the State Division I cross country championships in November. The Centurions finished third by two points in the closest finish in State-meet history. Klawer is the defending 3,200-meter champion and Boeding won the 1,600 in last year's league finals.
