GIRLS' TENNIS NOTEBOOK: DOUBLES ARE SINGLED OUT LANCASTER PLAYS TO ITS STRENGTH THROUGH DIVISION.

But on Tuesday, Lancaster's best hope of winning a pivotal Golden League match against Highland was splitting doubles partners so they could compete on the singles circuit.

as Reickgenannt, a junior German exchange student who is among the league's best players, swept all three of her matches to lead Lancaster to a 10-8 victory over Highland.

The victory was significant because it positions Lancaster (7-2) to finish league play in a tie for second with Highland (8-1), which has yet to play the 17-time league champion Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill (8-0) in the second round of league.

If Lancaster and Highland finish league tied, the automatic Southern Section team playoff berth would be decided by a coin toss.

Lancaster's doubles teams won six of nine matches, with Anne Zimmerman and Brittany Carter going 3-0.

``All my girls played as tough as they could and earned every point that they could because they wanted to secure second place even if it was in a tie because they'd rather lose in a coin flip than lose outright,'' Werthmann said.

``We also wanted to show that we could beat Highland.''

Quartz Hill is ranked No.2 in the most recent Div.IV poll shouldn't be a surprise.

But considering the Rebels fell off the rankings completely after being ranked in the top 10 most of last season, Quartz Hill coach Bill Lenaway isn't taking anything for granted.

Lenaway said he thinks his team has fallen in the rankings in recent years because the league isn't known for being as competitive as the Southern Section's coastal regions.

Rankings are the basis for playoff seeding, meaning if Quartz Hill retains its current ranking, it wouldn't be paired with top-ranked Sage Hill of Newport Coast until the finals.

``I'm glad to see it,'' Lenaway said. ``The last few years we weren't ranked, and then we went on to prove ourselves (in the Southern Section playoffs). I'm hoping we're staying up there because we're supporting our ranking.''

Quartz Hill remained on course to win its 18th consecutive league title after Thursday's 15-3 victory over Lancaster.

``Again, (Lenaway's) got enough depth to beat Highland and Lancaster,'' Werthmann said.

``That's the story of his career.''

Talent showcase: Thursday's 15-3 loss to Quartz Hill featured an eagerly anticipated matchup between Reickgenannt and Rebels sensation Ashley Litchfield. Litchfield, one of the league's all-time best, won the match 6-2, but Reickgenannt's moxie (language, music) Moxie - A language for real-time computer music synthesis, written in XPL.
