GIRLS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: VALENCIA READY FOR LEAGUE.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

All the Valencia High girls' soccer team did was sweep its nonleague competition into one big pile and push it under the rug. And now the Vikings are looking ahead to the Foothill League season.

Valencia, 12-0-2 before its final nonleague game Wednesday against Oaks Christian of Westlake Village, has allowed two goals in 14 games. The Vikings beat Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  of La Crescenta 3-0 in the championship game of the Hart tournament over winter break.

``All we did was start from where we left off last year,'' said coach Tony Scalercio, who is in his sixth year. ``Every year it gets better.''

The Vikings reached the Southern Section Div. II final last year, where they lost 2-0 to Westlake.

Credit much of Valencia's recent success to its team-wide commitment to defense and veteran players who understand and execute Scalercio's program.

``Our forwards defend as much as anyone on the team,'' Scalercio said. ``They're expected to. As a team we're playing great defense.''

Valencia will play Burroughs of Burbank in its first league game Friday at 3:15 p.m.

--Out, not down: Hart coach Jose Leon probably won't be playing the California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  state lottery A game of chance operated by a state government.

``I have the worst luck in the world,'' Leon said.

The Indians' injury-plagued season has continued; there were eight players out in a 2-0 loss to Buena of Ventura on Tuesday.

Brittany Clay-Watkins, a forward, has spent time on the bench with lower-back problems throughout the first half of the season.

``I'm pretty pumped for (the Canyon) game,'' Clay-Watkins said. ``I'm starting to practice now so I can be ready for league.''

``The last few years they've been peaking too early,'' coach Lisa Rollo said. ``(Last year) they (peaked) during preseason, and by the end of the season, they lost to Hart.''

Although Canyon (4-3-3) wasn't able to find its stride during nonleague play, Rollo believes the team is hitting it now.

``We're not doing very many drills anymore,'' Rollo said. ``We're just playing. They're not bored by dumb DEAF, DUMB, AND BLIND. A man born deaf, dumb, and blind, is considered an idiot. (q.v.) 1 Bl. Com. 304; F. N. B. 233; 2 Bouv. Inst. n. 2111.

Despite taking nearly two weeks off over winter break, Rollo said her players returned to practice this week in good form, and just one is sick.

``It's one player versus 10, so I'm OK with that,'' Rollo said.
