GIRLS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: BEST OF TIMES FOR VALENCIA SOCCER DEFENDING-CHAMPION VIKINGS COULD HAVE FOOTHOLD ON ANOTHER TITLE.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

These are good times for Valencia High's girls' soccer program.

The Vikings own summer bragging rights over their crosstown cross·town or cross-town

Foothill League rivals. And Valencia won't mind the ``defending league champions'' label that will accompany it into the upcoming season.

``We were extremely proud,'' coach Tony Scalercio said. Rightly so. Valencia outlasted Hart and Canyon in one of the tightest championship races imaginable i·mag·i·na·ble

. ``It was a great reward for all the hard work we've put in the past three years.''

Winning the school's first Foothill League title while snapping Hart's run of championships, the Vikings can set their sights on repeating.

What about another title? Valencia appears to have the league's most experienced group coming back. Six senior starters were lost, but the bulk of the roster was a talented sophomore class.

The junior corps of this team includes Jaisa Creps, Melanie Ervin, Courtney Morgan and Shari Summers.

``We're going to be able to compete,'' Scalercio said.

Summers could be the league's best returning player along with Canyon's Jaime Rendich and Saugus's Jocelyn Hinds Hinds may refer to:

``Shari Summers was the marquee player of the league. She should do really well,'' Scalercio said. ``She's a great player at any level, including the club level. And she's a phenomenal high school player.''

--Camp Scalercio: Valencia's summer camp wrapped up on Friday after a six-week session which if anything allowed the Vikings to bond.

``The only thing we accomplished is for the freshmen and the returning players to get to know each other,'' Scalercio said. ``We don't work on anything special.''

--Replacing Laci: There's no miracle understudy on the Lancaster High campus capable of carrying on Laci Fults' legacy.

Fults finished her Eagles' career as the best in the school's short history. She totaled almost 75 career goals.

But Lancaster, minus its high-scoring star, should remain a Golden League championship contender. For the next couple years.

Lancaster has a solid group coming back. It starts with Kathleen Prieto, who thrived as a freshman center midfielder

Prieto is skilled enough to play club soccer for West Valley United, one of the top programs in the region. She's a sweeper for her club team, but Eagles coach Rick Acuna anticipates Prieto assuming the primary offensive role this winter.

``She can score 20 goals for us,'' he said.

Prieto has the tools to develop into the Golden League's next superstar in the mold mold, name for certain multicellular organisms of the various classes of the kingdom Fungi, characteristically having bodies composed of a cottony mycelium. ``Kellie Cox is a great player. But Kellie was surrounded by awesome players,'' Acuna said. ``Kellie might have an advantage over Kathleem in speed. But in ball control and shooting they're pretty even.''

A baseball adage is that teams are built up the middle at catcher, center field, second base and shortstop.

``We can be strong for a couple years,'' Acuna said.
