"Last year, our team kind of stepped back and was satisfied with where we were," said Arias, a senior co-captain. "We proved (this year) that we all want more."

Sylmar's 2-1 victory Wednesday over Granada Hills made the second-seeded Spartans (30-2) the first Valley Mission League team to reach the City girls' soccer final.

Competing for a City title demonstrates Sylmar's growth under seventh-year coach Jose Navarro. The Spartans scored one goal in his first season and suffered first-round losses in 2004-05 before reaching the quarterfinals last season.

"These girls understand where they're coming from," Navarro said. "They appreciate what they have and how hard they had to work to earn it."

With UCLA-bound Nicole Sweetman sidelined the entire season with a knee injury, the Lions (16-6-1) were reduced to four available seniors on their roster.

"The seniors understood what their roles were, whether it was starting or coming off the bench," Oaks Christian coach Jan Hethcock said. "Nobody complained about playing time, they just went out there and did what was asked of them and did a great job."
