GIRLS' SOCCER NOTEBOOK: ALLEGIANCES BREW IN TITLE CHASE.

Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

The Golden League girls' soccer race is beginning to look more like a season of television's ``Survivor'' with strange new alliances being formed every week.

The latest episode saw several members of league-leading Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill (4-7-2, 3-0-1) in attendance at Tuesday's game between host Highland (13-2-1, 3-1) and Palmdale (5-5-5, 1-1-1).

``I looked up in the stands and there's Quartz Hill, cheering for Palmdale,'' said Highland coach Juan Paolo, whose team prevailed 2-1 on a goal by Janet Janet: see Clouet, Jean.

``I know they weren't cheering for them last Thursday.''

Palmdale played visiting Quartz Hill to a scoreless tie Jan. 13, perhaps forcing Paolo to silently praise Palmdale because the deadlock See deadly embrace.

gave Highland - which lost to Quartz Hill 4-2 on Jan. 6 - a chance to win the league outright with a victory Jan. 29 against Quartz Hill and another Feb. 8 at Palmdale.

``I think I'm going to have a heart attack by the time this season is over,'' Paolo said. ``We got the win we needed against Palmdale, but it wasn't easy. Now we've got three games that we need to win before we play Quartz Hill again.''

--Wanted: a new tournament: Although it had to wait almost three weeks to conclude competition, Highland had no problem picking up where it left off in the Lancaster tournament, winning its second consecutive title and third in nine years Saturday.

After recording shutouts against Bishop Union and Burroughs of Ridgecrest on Dec. 27, Highland welcomed its break from league play by defeating Alverno of Sierra Madre Sierra Madre, city, United States

Highland outshot its two opponents Saturday by a 53-0 margin and finished the tournament by outscoring the four teams 20-0.

``It was good because everybody got to play at least 35 minutes in both games,'' Paolo said.

Senior Diana Mendez, who had two goals and four assists in the semifinal win against Alverno, was selected the tournament's most valuable player.
