GIRLS' SOCCER: THAT'S HARVARD-WESTLAKE'S KIND OF GAME WOLVERINES SLOW PACE TO EARN SHUTOUT WIN OVER LOUISVILLE H.-W. 1, LOUISVILLE 0.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

It isn't often a team wants to slow down, but that's what the Harvard- Westlake High girls' soccer team did against Louisville on Friday night at Crespi High of Encino.

Louisville of Woodland Hills set a frantic pace to start, which caught Harvard-Westlake of Studio City off-guard. But the Wolverines brought the pace back to their liking in time to win 1-0.

``Our style of play is patient,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Stacy Schwartz said. ``Calm. Composed. We went in panic mode to start.''

Jen Sayles' goal, with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, brought the Wolverines (12-5, 7-1) back to earth.

It also gave the Wolverines momentum going into the second half. Hovering hov·er

With the victory, No. 2 Harvard-Westlake took over sole possession of the Mission League's top spot. The Wolverines' only league loss was to Louisville, and the victory left them feeling good.

``We wanted to win that game really badly,'' Sayles said. ``We really want to win league. We were just really focused.''

It was the second consecutive league loss for the second-place Royals, who fell to Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks this week.

Megan Merritt, the only player to score on Harvard-Westlake in league play, was marked tightly throughout the match. The senior striker had the game-winner over Harvard-Westlake in the teams' first meeting, and she made several spectacular runs Friday, but ultimately was frustrated frus·trate

``Our defense is the heart and soul of this team,'' Schwartz said.

Lauren Fischer, the Wolverines' stopper, saved a sure goal for Louisville on a corner kick late in the game. Merritt headed the ball to the far post, but Fischer was there to pick it off the line.

``After that I knew it wasn't meant to be,'' Louisville coach Jose Perez said.

Louisville's Maegan Pickett also had a good look at the Wolverines' net late in the second, after getting around Harvard-Westlake's keeper Keeper may mean:

It was Louisville's third game this week, and the Royals played catch-up in the second half.

``We got tired,'' Perez said. ``It was just too much.''

Louisville keeper Debbie Morgan kept Harvard-Westlake at bay for much of the game, making smart plays throughout.

She had a superb save on a breakaway break·a·way

``She was in the right place at the right time,'' Sayles said. ``I think a lot of times she saved them.''
