Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

The Sylmar High girls' soccer team took another step Thursday Thursday: see week.  night toward capturing the first Valley Mission League title in program history.

And it might have been the most important step of all.

After not surrendering a goal in nearly a month, the host Spartans Spartans

``Reseda came to play and they didn't go away,'' said Sylmar coach Jose Navarro, whose team defeated Reseda (7-6-2, 4-2-2) for the third time this season.

``I told them `What's going to happen if that situation occurs again in the playoffs? Are we going to crumble crum·ble

``They just kept fighting. It's an excellent group of girls with a lot of heart.''

Carol Martinez scored her area-leading 31st goal in the first minute for Sylmar (23-2, 7-0), which can clinch Clinch, river, c.300 mi (480 km) long, formed by the junction of two forks in SW Va., and flowing generally SW across E Tenn. to the Tennessee River at Kingston.  a tie for the title with a victory Monday against visiting Kennedy of Granada Hills (6-5-3, 4-2-1).

``The girls take a lot of pride in that,'' said Navarro, whose team has outscored opponents 104-11. ``They've never had anything like that before.''

No. 1 with a bullet: Since moving to the top spot in the Southern Section Div. VI poll three weeks ago, the Desert Christian of Lancaster girls' soccer team hasn't shown any signs of letting up with the postseason starting in two weeks.

The Knights posted a 10-0 victory over host Mojave on Thursday, with nine players scoring goals en route to the team's 18th consecutive High Desert League victory, the longest current league winning streak among area teams.

Robyn Estrada recorded her team-leading 26th goal and Jaide Garcia scored twice for the Knights (18-2-1, 12-0).

``We're playing well, but we know we're going to face better competition (in the playoffs),'' Desert Christian coach Deann Lewis said. ``I just hope we can turn it up when we have to.''

Stating its case: Birmingham of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  served notice to the City Section girls' soccer seeding committee Thursday with its 2-0 victory over Chatsworth that the Patriots are worthy of a top-eight seed.

After already defeating Chatsworth in the Hart of Newhall tournament and playing Granada Hills to a tie in West Valley League competition, Birmingham (10-5-3, 2-3-3) recorded perhaps its most impressive victory of the season against the Chancellors (5-2-1 in league).

Stephanie Cubias had a goal and an assist for the Patriots, who received strong play in net from Charleye Schneiderman.

A quick trip: Highland of Palmdale girls' soccer standout Janet Janet: see Clouet, Jean.
