BELL GARDENS -- A day after battling for the Southern Section Div. I championship, members of the Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:

and Upland girls' soccer teams put aside any lingering tension Sunday to join forces on the South squad for the 16th annual Senior High School All-Star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games .

The combination presented a challenge for the North team, especially goalkeepers Ayana Sumiyasu (Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge) and Katie Beaulieu (Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks).

The six players from Mater Dei and Upland combined for three goals and three assists, and El Toro El To·ro

"I knew just about everyone here and there were some amazing players out there," said Sumiyasu, who plays club soccer on the Slammers under-19 premier team, which features Westlake's Kate Edwards, Upland's Alyssa Davila and Mater Dei's Kellye Joswick and Jackie Zinke. "To be here, you have to be some of the top players in the area. It was good competition."

The Yale-bound Sumiyasu recorded three first-half saves and Beaulieu (Loyola Marymount) stopped nine shots in the second half for the North team, which featured 15 local athletes.

But there was only so much they could do against the South, which received goals from Upland's Lauren Barnes, Mater Dei's Liz Zadro, Tesoro of Rancho Santa Margarita's Natalie Romine and Davila.

The North tied the score at 1-1 in the 13th minute when Edwards (Rice) headed a corner kick from Westlake teammate Kylie McDonald (Pepperdine) inside the right post.

"It was because of Kate and her mom (Julie) that I started playing club," said McDonald, who assisted on a goal by Beverly Hills' Tess Callner in the 88th minute. "We started playing (at the under-11 level) at So Cal United and we've had a lot of good years together. This was our last game, so it was cool (to assist on Kate's goal)."

Highland of Palmdale's Janet Mendez, who has narrowed her choices to Long Beach State and USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , set up Redondo Union of Redondo Beach's Stephanie Hebert (New Mexico) 75 seconds into the second half to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Kelly and Oakes contributed to ECR's seventh consecutive City Section title and Johnson led La Salle to a Div. IV crown.

Joswick, Zadro and Zinke helped Mater Dei defeat Upland 1-0, snapping the Highlanders' 60-match unbeaten streak.
