GIRLS' SOCCER: A LITTLE LUCK FOR LANCERS WIN OVER ROYAL SECURES TITLE T.O. 1, ROYAL 0.

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  -- Megan Meyer called it a "lucky" goal.

But at the end of a regular season that saw the Thousand Oaks' girls' soccer team go winless in its first two Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. "I barely got my toe on it," said Meyer, who helped the Lancers (18-4-3, 10-1-3) go unbeaten in their final 13 games. "But a goal's a goal."

With the barrage of first-half shots the Lancers had against Royal senior goalkeeper Nicole Padilla, it appeared a goal would be inevitable.

Despite playing with a broken finger and a sprained left ankle, Padilla finished with 10 saves, twice denying Michelle Cruz on breakaways in the opening 25minutes and coming through with several other timely deflections for the Highlanders (12-3-6, 8-2-4).

"They're a great team and their goalkeeper did a great job," said Raives, who remained unbeaten in the 16 games he coached this season. All of Thousand Oaks' losses came during his suspension for violating the SouthernSection's association rule.

"I thought we had a lot of chances to put it away in the firsthalf, but to Royal's credit, they came back in the second half. But we wanted to show there's a reason why we're winning the league and it's not because we tied."

Said Royal coach Scott Cameron, whose only league losses came against Thousand Oaks: "(My girls) have the biggest heart of any team I've ever coached. There's no quit in them. We had our chances, but (Thousand Oaks is) a good champion. They're worthy of a championship."

Senior Katie Coulas, a central figure in Thousand Oaks' 2005 run to a league co-championship -- sharing the title with Royal -- helped swing the momentum back in the Lancers' favor midway through the second half, leading to Birgel's free kick.

"No matter what happened we felt like we were going to score," Coulas said. "This is the most amazing a·maze
