GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: TAFT COMES OUT OF SHADOWS OVERLOOKED TEAM NOW A CONTENDER.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

LOS ALAMITOS Los Alamitos (lôs ăləmē`təs, lŏs), city (1990 pop. 11,676), Orange co., NE of Long Beach, S Calif., in a suburban area; inc. 1960. Los Alamitos Racetrack and U.S. military installations are nearby.  -- The area's top two football teams had differing approaches Sunday when it came to learning about their first-round opponents in the Southern Section playoffs.

Oaks Christian of Westlake Village had a casual attitude. So laid back, in fact, that coach Bill Redell Bill Redell (born April 17, 1941 in Red Bluff, California) is an American football coach and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Redell serves as head coach at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California, since 2000, and has formed them into one of  didn't even make the trip to the Southern Section office, leaving assistants Mark Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks' coaching staff was all business from the moment head coach Kevin Rooney Kevin Rooney born on May 4, 1956 in Catskill, NY and is a boxing trainer and former boxer. Rooney won the 1975 147lb Sub-Novice New York Golden Gloves Championship. Rooney defeated Kevin Higgins of West Point in the finals.
stepped out of his car, already with his game face on five days in advance of the Knights' Pac-5 Division showdown with Dana Hills of Dana Point (5-5).

It was almost appropriate that the two programs exhibited opposing styles, because their paths to competing in division championship games will be remarkably different as well.

``The division is as strong as it's ever been,'' said Rooney, whose team has won 45 of 46 games, including three division titles in the past four years. ``Obviously, it's going to be a tremendous challenge.''

At the top of the list of challengers are Notre Dame's potential quarterfinal opponents Long Beach Poly (9-1) and Mater Dei of Santa Ana (8-2). Orange Lutheran (9-1) and fourth-seeded Esperanza of Anaheim (9-1), last year's Div. I runner-up, possibly await the top-seeded Knights (10-0) in the semifinals.

Oaks Christian (10-0), the top seed in the Northwest Division, is not only seeking a fourth consecutive championship but is closing in on the Southern Section record of 46 consecutive victories, held by Canyon of Canyon Country (1983-86) and Temple City (1969-73). The Lions enter the postseason on a 41-game winning streak.

``Every week we play is just a chance to get one step closer,'' said Bates, whose Lions could possibly face Tri-Valley League rival Oak Park (9-1) in the division final for the third time in four years.

``They like to play football, and they want to play more games, and they just enjoy practicing and being around oneanother. When you have that kind of environment, it's easy to keep them motivated.''

Notre Dame and Oaks Christian are two of the three area teams that received top seeds, along with Burroughs of Burbank (9-1) in the Central Division. The Indians, who play host to Moreno Valley (6-4), last reached a title game in 1987.

Canyon of Canyon Country (7-2), the defending Div. II champion, received the secondseed in the Northern Division, which features nine local qualifiers. The Cowboys play host to Royal of Simi Valley (5-5) in one of three first-round matchups between area teams.

Moorpark (8-2), which fell out of the Northern's top spot with Friday's loss to Westlake (10-0), dropped to No. 5 and plays host to Camarillo (4-6). Third-seeded Westlake faces visiting Oxnard (7-3).

Crespi of Encino (6-4), the two-time Div. X champion, plays at Edison of Huntington Beach (8-2) in its Pac-5 opener.
