GIRLS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: IT'S FULL-SPEED AHEAD FOR A.V.Byline: Rich Hammond Staff Writer The Antelope Valley High girls' basketball team played Tehachapi on Monday, the Antelopes' eighth game in 11 days. That would seem to be the worst possible scenario for an up-tempo team, but the Antelopes are thriving. Antelope Valley won the Valencia tournament Saturday with a two-point victory over defending Southern Section champion Harvard-Westlake, and the legs of point guard Shaquina Mosley looked as fresh as ever at the end of the game. The Antelopes will try to break down teams with a fast-break attack and a pressure defense, and Mosley and Sheena Crenshaw give the Antelopes a good scoring combination. ``We have a pretty quick team, so we would like to run the whole game,'' coach April Davenport said. ``We have the athletes, but we need to show some discipline. ``We have a lot of good street ballplayers, but we need to execute a little better.'' --Good start: Highland went 7-20 last season, but the Bulldogs improved to 5-5 this season with a victory over Canyon on Monday. The Bulldogs are small - their starting forwards, Tionna Cunningham and Amy Burleson, stand 5-foot-7 and 5-6 - but that duo led the Bulldogs in scoring last season, along with returning guard Trina Staples. Highland should get a size boost later in the season from 5-10 sophomore forward Lilia Organista, who is learning the offense. |
