GIRLS' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: HART FINDING ITS GROOVE.

Early in the year, Ashlee Trebilcock carried the Hart girls' basketball team. As the only returning starter from last season's Southern Section Div. I-A runner-up, she pretty much had to.

After an early-season win over Sylmar, in which she had 20 points and 12 rebounds and eight assists, the UCLA-bound Trebilcock said she had never felt so exhausted after a game.

Shortly afterward, she fell ill with the flu.

It might not have been a fun time for Trebilcock, but it was just what Hart needed because it forced her teammates to develop and learn to win without her.

Since then, Hart has rolled to titles at the Nike tournament in Phoenix and the Edison tournament last weekend. Both are among the toughest in the nation.

``In the beginning, it was more all Ashlee and we all weren't clicking. But now it's crunch time with league coming up and everybody's contributing,'' senior guard Brit Brown said. ``We're so much better now. It's been a big change from the beginning of the year.''

Brown is among the key role players who must play well if Hart wants to duplicate last season's success. She is filling the role Ali Campbell played last season but is more of a slasher slash·er

Another key role player is senior Ally Neill, who is starting at power forward and had the best game of her career in the semifinals of the Edison tournament against Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:

. Hart came from behind in that game, and Neill's 12 points and 10 rebounds were crucial.

Neill, who missed most of last season with an injury, gets most of her points off assists from Trebilcock and sophomore guard Taylor Lilley. But Hart coach Dave Munroe is quick to underline the importance of her contributions.

``Hey, she still has to make them,'' Munroe said. ``Not everyone can do that. She's been very important for us.''

With the role players stepping up, it allows Hart's stars - Trebilcock and Lilley - to shine.

Lilley averaged 16.8 points at the Edison tournament. Trebilcock averaged 19 and was named tournament MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. .
