GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL SEMIFINALS: TAFT'S POTTER IS ALWAYS IN MOTION.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer Getting Samantha Potter to rest can be a bigger challenge for the Taft High of Woodland Hills girls' volleyball team than that posed by many of their opponents. ``She never runs out of energy,'' Taft volleyball coach Arman Mercado For the hispanic surname "Mercado", please see de Mercado. Mercado first originated in Spain. In English it means 'market'. Is the last name of the 'Great' Fifa Soccer player Eswold. said. Not even starring in two sports in the same season has managed to slow Potter. When Potter isn't playing middle blocker for aToreadors volleyball team that plays in the City semifinals tonight, the 5-foot-9 sophomore competes for cross country team, for which she broke the school sophomore record. ``She's a good athlete,'' Mercado said. ``People think (cross country) is just something she does, but they don't realize how good she is. She's probably in the top five in the City.'' Potter set the City freshman record in the mile last spring with a time of 5 minutes, 29 seconds. Her 19:18 cross country finish earlier this season set the school mark for sophomores. If not for a postponement, Potter would have run in the City cross country prelims last Wednesday, then played in the volleyball quarterfinals that night. Rain pushed the cross country meet to Monday, giving Potter big events on back-to-back days this week, with the volleyball team tonight trying to keep alive hopes for for its first City title. Mercado tried to give Potter a chance to rest a sore leg during the quarterfinals. Potter was on the bench for the first game, but as usual, rarely stopped moving. After serving as a vocal cheerleader from the bench, Potter was bouncing around on the court before getting the start in the second game, in which she had kills on the first two plays. ``She's always going,'' Mercado said. --Wild matchup: Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's prediction of a possible Div.
