This year, the Rebels have their best chance to break out.

Quartz Hill, which last season finished second to five-time defending league champion Highland, features its best team in a while with five seniors and four starters coming back.

The best of the returners might be Randi Cooper, a senior setter setter: see sporting dog.

and three-year varsity starter. Cooper is the team's captain and will be looked upon for leadership to guide the Rebels to the league's elite.

``It's natural for me to be a leader,'' Cooper said. ``I love volleyball. It's my life. Being a leader adds to my love for the game.''

Cooper said the Rebels know this is their best chance to beat Highland, so the time to step up is now.

``There's going to be a lot of pressure this year because Quartz Hill has failed to beat Highland every year,'' Cooper said. ``This year, we will finally have a chance. Last year, we had a chance, too, but we didn't follow through. I want to go out by beating Highland.''

Many of Cooper's teammates know much of Quartz Hill's success will rest on her.

``She's a great player, she's always on top of things,'' right-side hitter Natalie Coe said. ``She's our leader. She always pushes people to do their best and work hardest at what they do. If the ball drops, she makes sure it doesn't happen again. She's tough on us, but in a good way. Everyone wants to be like Randi.

``If we didn't have someone like her, we wouldn't be where we are today. She pushes us to the absolute end of our limits. Without her, we'd be a lot lazier.''

Carrick, a junior middle blocker, said more of the same.

``I think Randi's awesome, to tell you the truth,'' Carrick said. ``She has a great attitude and is always wanting everyone to do their best. She pushes all of us. She's our captain and she does a good job at it.''

Carrick will be another player on whom the Rebels will rely this year. She is coming up from the junior varsity junior varsity

Other returning players include junior Kristen Boyson, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter who is switching from middle blocker to give the Rebels more offensive firepower fire·pow·er

Senior Danielle Gruen also will be looked upon to help at outside hitter.

The big difference for Quartz Hill should be team chemistry. Last year, the Rebels weren't in sync with each other, causing the team to fall apart at key moments.

``Last season was a huge disappointment,'' Cooper said. ``I think we were pretty much equal in talent to Highland last year, but our emotional status was way low. We had some major head cases on the team.''

It didn't help that practices used to be voluntary and only a few players would attend. But this season, the situation has been rectified rectified

Quartz Hill opens its season at home Wednesday against Burroughs of Ridgecrest.
