Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

LA JOLLA La Jolla (lə hoi`yə), on the Pacific Ocean, S Calif., an uninc. district within the confines of San Diego; founded 1869. The beautiful ocean beaches, in particular La Jolla shores and Black's Beach, and sea-washed caves attract visitors and  - One of the few thoughts capable of dimming the huge smiles across the faces of the Harvard-Westlake of Studio City girls' volleyball team Tuesday night was the notion that, had the Wolverines played this way four days earlier, they would likely be champions.

``We're trying not to think about that,'' sophomore Cathryn Quinn said.

horrific passing game led to an upset loss in Friday's Southern Section Div. III-A final, Harvard-Westlake was back in form Tuesday to pull off an upset of its own in the opening round of the state Div. III playoffs. The Wolverines needed less than an hour to sweep fourth-seeded San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. ``The most important thing is we didn't let Friday affect us,'' Harvard-Westlake junior middle blocker Kaitlin Segal said. ``That's behind us. We played like a different team. It doesn't matter who's on the other side of the net now, all we're focused on is winning.''

Quinn had a match-high 12 kills. Segal and teammate Brittany Julian added 11 kills apiece. Sophomore setter setter: see sporting dog.

 Katherine Sebastian contributed 33 assists.

``We made a commitment we weren't just going to come in here and go through the motions,'' Quiroz said. ``We wanted to win.''

La Jolla (28-7) overcame an early deficit to lead 9-4 in the first game, but with the game tied 14-14, Harvard-Westlake took control by scoring nine of the next 10 points.

The Wolverines put together similar rolls in the remaining two games, scoring 10 of the last 11 points in the second game and the last five in the third game, with Sebastian tapping the ball over for the clincher clinch·er

``We were so fired up,'' Quinn said. ``We were so excited.''

Harvard-Westlake has won three state titles, but because of its youth this season figured to be a year away from contending again. The Wolverines are seeking their first championship of the season, having finished as runner-up in both the Mission League and section races.
