Canyon of Canyon Country girls' volleyball players danced to music playing over loudspeakers at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's gymnasium during a timeout Tuesday night.

That's because the Cowboys remained close and even led three times in the first game of a 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 Southern Section Div. I-A first-round playoff loss to the heavily favored Wolverines (24-4).

Canyon (11-9) taking early leads might not be a surprise. Giving the No. 4 seed Wolverines a fight with two of its middle blockers (Julian Anderson and Sara Gibson) sitting out impressed co-coach Brian Ingino and gave him some satisfaction despite being eliminated.

Anderson, a senior starter, tore ligaments in her right ankle during a loss to Saugus on Nov. 2. Gibson, Anderson's backup, was fighting flu-like symptoms.

The Wolverines took over the match behind backup outside hitter Katherine Kanoff (11 kills), defensive specialist Taylor Morgan's serves and an 11-2 run in the second game.

Middle blockers Audrey Eichler and Catherine Quinn added to the attack with 21 combined kills.

Thousand Oaks 3, Long Beach Millikan 2: Kat Luft had eight kills and seven blocks, Hannah Clancy added six kills, 17 digs and 32 assists, and Becca Clancy recorded 19 digs for host Thousand Oaks (24-2), which survived a scare in its Div. I-AA opener to post a 25-10, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-4 victory.

Westlake 3, Long Beach 2: Cal State Northridge-bound outside hitter Alex Johnson had 26 kills to lead the visiting Warriors (20-4) to a 25-19, 25-22, 14-25, 20-25, 16-14 victory over Long Beach Poly (17-11) in a thrilling Div. I-AA opener.

Kelsey Kaehler recorded 40 assists and Cathy Quilico added 32 digs for Westlake.

Lakewood 3, Moorpark 0: One of the most successful seasons in Musketeers' (19-6) history came to an end with a 25-17, 25-17, 31-29 setback in their Div. I-AA opener.

Hart 3, San Marcos 0: Gazelle D'Artois had 17 kills, Caitlyn Ramirez added 11 kills and Jamie Long contributed 31 assists in a 31-29, 25-22, 25-13 win for the Indians (16-8), who play Arroyo Grande (19-0) in a Div. I-A second-round match.

La Canada 3, Crescenta Valley 0: Courtney McCutchan had nine kills and Molly Berger added eight as host La Canada defeated Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta 25-14, 25-16, 25-13 in its Div. II-A playoff opener.

Kim McCutchan had six kills for La Canada (14-9), which defeated C.V. (13-12) for the second time this season.

Burroughs 3, San Marino 1: Karissa Lagmay had 19 kills and Tatiana Sao added 13 kills for visiting Burroughs of Burbank (14-8) in a 17-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 win in Div. II-A.

Viewpoint 3, Windward 0: Samantha Borenstein had 27 assists and Marisa Leonard added eight kills to lead host Viewpoint of Calabasas (19-4) to a 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 first-round win over Windward of Los Angeles in Div. IV-AA.

Providence 3, Mary Star of the Sea 1: Heather Hansen had 14 kills and seven digs and Natalie Kasbarian added 26 assists and eight digs for the host Pioneers in a 23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 victory in their Div. IV-AA opener.

Oaks Christian 3, St. Joseph/SM 0: Molly Cindric had 11 kills to lead the host Lions (12-5) to a 25-20, 25-12, 25-10 Div. III-A victory over St. Joseph (10-10).

Oak Park 3, Culver City 2: Sara Majidian had 20 kills and Samantha Macks added eight blocks for the Eagles (21-4) rallied for a 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 25-15, 15-8 road win in their Div. III-AA opener.
