Granada Hills girls' tennis hadn't broken a sweat all season. All of its matches had been 7-0 or 6-1 throughout a perfect regular season and into Friday's City final.

The Highlanders were an excellent team, but they had no competition. Playing Carson in the finals was like trying to run a marathon after only having run sprints.

Carson swept in doubles to beat Granada Hills (15-1) in the finals at Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  Tennis Center for the second year in a row by a 4-3 score.

``I knew it would be 4-3 either way,'' Granada Hills coach Ron Wood Ronald David "Ronnie" Wood (born June 1, 1947 in Hillingdon, London) is an English rock guitarist and bassist best known as a member of The Rolling Stones, Faces, and The Jeff Beck Group.  said. ``I don't feel as bad as last year because this year they beat us. They earned it.''

Last year, Carson (16-0) won because Granada Hills' singles player Christine Dao had to default with an ankle injury. That was one of the reasons Granada Hills was seeded No. 1 to Carson's No. 2 when both had perfect records and Carson was defending champ.

The finals came down to the No. 1 doubles matchup, already interesting because both teams sent their No. 3 singles players to No. 1 doubles to try to gain an edge.

Fans crowded along the fence to watch the match that would decide the 3-3 tie. Canna canna [Lat.,=cane], any plant of the genus Canna, tropical and subtropical perennials, grown in temperate regions in parks and gardens for the large foliage and spikelike, usually red or yellow blossoms.  Furuta and Tracey Takeshita rallied to force a third set after dropping the first. But their serve was broken in the first game to get into another hole.

A smash by Takeshita evened the set at 3-3, but Granada Hills gave the break right back the following game. Furuta and Takeshita survived two match points before losing 6-4.

Granada Hills had an early lead by taking three of four singles matches. Dao won 6-2, 6-0 in a best-of-three format. No. 1 player Jessica Nguyen Jessica Nguyen was born on November 24, 1987, and she is a tennis player for Stanford University. College career
