GIRLS' SWIMMING DAILY NEWS ALL-AREA TEAM AND HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON SWIMMER OF THE YEAR.

Byline: Compiled by Ross Siler Staff Writer

Brett Shiflett, Oaks Christian, Sr.

Shiflett started her career at Oaks Christian competing on her own for a first-year school that did not even have a pool, let alone a swim team. She ended it standing alone as arguably ar·gu·a·ble

the top athlete in the school's history.

Shiflett won six Southern Section Div. IV career titles and set section records in four events. The final two came this year in the 100-yard freestyle (51.15 seconds) and the 200 freestyle (1:49.80).

Both times earned Shiflett automatic All-America honors and ranked in the top 25 nationally. There was little Shiflett didn't do, including being a repeat selection as the Daily News Swimmer of the Year.

Shiflett overcame considerable adversity during her career, dislocating her kneecap kneecap (patella), saucer-shaped bone at the front of the knee joint; it protects the ends of the femur, or thighbone, and the tibia, the large bone of the foreleg. The kneecap is embedded in the tendon tissue of the quadriceps femoris, a large thigh muscle.  her sophomore year and losing her father to a heart attack in her junior year. As a freshman, Shiflett's mother had to drive her to Oxnard just so she could compete in meets unattached.

But Oaks Christian's swim team now has swelled to more than 50 members, with the boys' and girls' teams placing in the top five at the section championships.

The final act for Shiflett came at her team's banquet last month, which ended with a video shown of Shiflett's career highlights set to music. And she will go down in history as the swimmer who started it all at the school.

``People have said that a lot recently,'' said Shiflett, who is taking the summer off from competition. ``It's kind of weird to hear.''

Her only regret was not being able to defend her section titles in her sophomore year, in which she twice finished second. The knee injury forced Shiflett to give up basketball and was the only thing keeping her from going a perfect 8 for 8 at the section meet.

Shiflett will swim next season for Ivy League Ivy League

Don't be surprised to see Bibb lead La Reina to the girls' Div. IV team title next year. The Regents finished second this season as Bibb won the 50 freestyle in 24.11. But her more impressive performance might have been taking second in 51.56 to Shiflett in the 100 freestyle. Only four freshmen in the nation had a faster time in the event.

Maryann Boosalis, La Canada, Jr.

Boosalis was unable to win her third consecutive Div. II title in the 100 breaststroke - finishing second to Corona Del Mar Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:

No one could accuse Gyuris of not trying something new this season. Rather than defend her Div. II title in the 100 freestyle, Gyuris opted to swim the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle - back-to-back events - and finished fourth in each. But Gyuris did help the Thousand Oaks girls end Royal of Simi Valley's three-year run of league team titles.

Alexa Merz, Harvard-Westlake, Jr.

The same day as the Div. I championships, Merz lifted weights with her club team in the morning. She did not taper for the meet, but her results were surprisingly good: third place in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Merz also won Mission League titles in the same events while never shifting her focus from qualifying for this summer's Olympic Trials.

Lizette Patterson, Saugus, Jr.

Patterson could be forgiven for not wanting the high school season to end. She clocked personal-best times in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke at the Div. I championships two weeks after doing likewise at the Speedo An earlier scalable font technology from Bitstream Inc., Cambridge, MA (www.bitstream.com). Speedo fonts used the .SPD extension. Leah Tourtellotte, Alemany, Sr.

Tourtellotte won the Mission League championship in the 200 individual medley by nearly four seconds and took second and sixth, respectively, in the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley at the Div. I championships. Her time of 52.21 seconds in the 100 freestyle was good for All-America consideration. Leah is five minutes older than her twin brother, Joel, who was selected to the All-Area boys' team.

Renee Viveros, Alemany, Sr.

Despite not being fully recovered from a bout with food poisoning food poisoning, acute illness following the eating of foods contaminated by bacteria, bacterial toxins, natural poisons, or harmful chemical substances. It was once customary to classify all such illnesses as "ptomaine poisoning," but it was later discovered that  she suffered at the Mexican Olympic Trials, Viveros took second in the 100 backstroke (57.34) and third in the 100 butterfly (56.45) both in automatic All-America times. She also won Mission League titles in the same events.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Teresa Frias, Cleveland

A former Birmingham of Lake Balboa swimmer, Frias never planned on returning to the Valley to coach high school swimming after she graduated from Salem International University ‡≈°d Salem International University is a small college in Salem, West Virginia. Coronado is across the bay.  in 2000 before she was recommended to succeed Barbara Suto and Jim Cromwell as coach at Cleveland of Reseda. ``It kind of fell in my lap,'' she said.

So Frias, of course, ended up being the coach who brought a City Section team title back to the Valley. The Cleveland girls won the school's first City championship, ending Palisades' three-year run of titles.

Frias has seen the Cavaliers program grow from 25 swimmers in the beginning to more than 80 now. The team originally was filled with seasonal swimmers from Frias' classes but has added club swimmers in Chungah Rhee and Michael Chiu.

Every time her team hits the water, Frias has a motivational quote waiting - one favorite is ``Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.'' She also instituted optional morning practices for her team.

And Frias has no plans of going anywhere in the near future. Now the goal is winning another championship.
