The senior striker scored a goal in a 2-0 victory over Valencia and after the game, helped coach Steve Ladanyi carry the corner flags off the field.

It was the first time Saugus defeated Valencia in Searcy's four years on the team and the victory likely will help put Saugus in the playoffs.

``I was thinking, 'I hope it goes in,' '' Searcy said.

``It was a nice ball,'' Morin said. ``I saw it coming in slow-motion.''

Even with the victory, Saugus didn't budge from its third-place spot, but the Centurions (11-5-3, 3-2-1) kept their distance - two points - from fourth-place Hart.

And it made Canyon happy - the Vikings' loss and a 7-0 victory over Burroughs of Burbank put the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

Saugus plays at Canyon on Friday and it will be the Centurions' second big game of the week.

``We have to have a good game against Canyon,'' Ladanyi said.

Erica Berriz wasn't fully healthy against Valencia, but she took enough well-calculated risks, now a league trademark, to keep her team in the first half.

Coaches from both teams said the senior keeper was a major factor in Saugus' victory, despite a sore shoulder, which was hit hard in a collision nearly two weeks ago.

``When the game started, I thought I would hesitate a little,'' Berriz said. ``But then I got pumped up.''

--Feelin' better: Without starting goalkeeper Melissa Deckers, who was serving an automatic one-game suspension because of a red card, Hart defeated Burbank 3-0 Tuesday. Becky Mansfield, Camber Jones and Brittany Clay-Watkins scored goals for Hart (3-2-2).

It was a welcome result after Hart's 7-1 loss to Canyon last week. Before that game, Hart surrendered just three goals in five games, two in a 3-2 win over Burroughs.

Coach Jose Leon credited his freshman sweeper, Michelle Mason.

``Michelle is just doing outstanding,'' Leon said.

--Imperfect storm: Although the rain held for much of the game between Saugus and Valencia on Tuesday, storm clouds converged on the Vikings' season after the whistle A simple whistle is a woodwind instrument which produces sound from a stream of forced air.

A 17-2-3 record is no cause for alarm, but Vikings coach Tony Scalercio talked about making changes after the second loss.

``This will be a character-building experience for us,'' he said. ``We'll train this week, regroup re·group

In both losses - the first against Canyon - Valencia was missing key players. Forward Kristi Kirst was unavailable for the Saugus game and Scalercio wasn't with the team against Canyon.

--Night moves: Canyon wants to push back its Friday afternoon home game against Saugus, scheduled for 3:15 p.m., so working parents and other fans can attend.

The Cowboys face a Saugus team that should be riding the momentum of its victory over Valencia on Tuesday.

``I'm excited about that game,'' Canyon coach Lisa Rollo said. ``It will be a good test, to see what they do against Saugus.''
