GIRLS' SOCCER: WESTLAKE RESPONDS WITH WIN.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

WESTLAKE VILLAGE -- When the Westlake High girls' soccer team needed Kate Edwards to play her best game of the year, the senior responded.

When coach Frank Marino needed his four freshmen to provide an offensive spark against one of the Marmonte League's top defenses, they delivered.

``It's the best game we've played all year when we needed it the most,'' said Marino, whose team extended its league unbeaten streak to 18 in a row since a 1-0 loss last year at Moorpark.

``They started off fast, but after that we just kind of settled down and played. I'm really proud of all of them.''

Freshmen Bridget Berman and Sara Riazi helped Westlake (7-1-5, 5-0-3) shift the momentum in the 10thminute. Berman played a perfect pass from just inside the midfield mid·field

It was the first of several combinations strung together by Berman, Riazi and fellow ninth-graders Andrea Todak and Nicole Gilbert, which kept the Musketeers (4-3-5, 3-1-4) chasing all night long.

``They just outplayed us,'' Moorpark coach Frank Paletta said. ``I thought we came out strong, but we're so young and we tried to cover without KP back there, but we panicked too much.

But her impact loomed much larger for the Warriors, who recorded their seventh shutout and remained unbeaten in their past 11 games.

``We needed her (Friday) and she stepped up and played incredible,'' Marino said.

Said Paletta: ``Edwards was on fire. She won every ball in the midfield.''
