Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

MONROVIA -- La Canada controlled the run of play Wednesday against defending Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

The Spartans denied last year's Southern Section Div. IV runner-up at every turn, except for one final shot.

Nancy Avesyan's goal looked like it was good enough to move La Canada into sole possession of first place. Instead, it was only enough to walk away with a tie for the top spot.

Avesyan scored her team-leading 21st goal in the 10th minute, but Kristin Hayford had the final say for the Wildcats, scoring 10 seconds before the final whistle for whistle for

``The girls played well, but we didn't do the things we needed to do at the end to win the game,'' La Canada coach Louis Bilowitz said.

``It hurts to have the game end like that, but it wouldn't be the first time it's happened and I'm sure it won't be the last.''

``I have to give their kids credit. They played with tremendous heart,'' Bilowitz said. ``But it's a tribute to our girls that they're celebrating a tie after scoring in the last 20 seconds.''

But additional shots by Avesyan, Yasmine Karam and Rachel Ragusa all misfired before Hayford scored nearly two minutes into extra time.
