GIRLS' BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: SECOND SEASON BEGINS FOR GIRLS' TEAMS.

The name of the game for most area girls' basketball teams in the playoffs is - travel - as in long distances.

One of those teams hitting the road is Royal. The Highlanders, the third-place team from the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The Marmonte Leauge is part of the CIF Southern Section. Click here to view the league schedule. , must travel about 100 miles Friday when they take on San Clemente San Clemente (săn klĭmĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 41,100), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; inc. 1928. Camp Pendleton, a large U.S. marine base, adjoins the city, which is chiefly residential.  in a Division I-A game.

The Tritons Tritons are a race of sea gods and goddesses born from Poseidon's son Triton. Like their father, their bodies ended with fish tails instead of legs. They are often compared to other Merman/Mermaid like beings, such as Merrows, Selkies, and Sirens.  are the top team from the South Coast League.

CAMARILLO

Record, league finish: 14-12, 6-2 tied for first

Coach: John Harbour

Key reserve: Lindsay Clark

Biggest win: Beat league favorite Channel Islands at home.

Biggest loss: To league favorite Channel Islands on the road.

How they got there: Tied for first in the Pacific View League.

Strengths: The leadership of Donahue and the scoring emergence of Ferriera.

Weaknesses Only one senior on the team (Donahue) means a lack of playoff play·off also play-off

ROYAL

Key starters:Mari Myllykoski (17.0 ppg), Teresa Russell (8.1 ppg), Kellie Gesell, Melissa Cruz, Annette Wilson.

Key reserve: Lisa Smith

Biggest win: Beating Moorpark in the final league game.

Biggest loss: Losing four of first six league games.

How they got there: Third place in the Marmonte League.

Strengths: Myllykoski's all-around game, Russell's play in the post and the play of Smith, a senior guard.

Weaknesses Depth took a hit when Kristen Galbreath broke her hand during December.

How far can they go?: Getting past San Clemente after the long bus ride will be a challenge. If they do, the quarterfinals are attainable.

Intangibles: The Highlanders have great team chemistry and, with Myllykoski, will always be in games.

SIMI VALLEY

Record, league finish: 20-6, 9-3, second place

Coach: Dave Murphy

Key starters: Elise Metcalfe, Jamie Sturdivant, Annmarie Turpin (13.5 ppg), Teresa Cooper, Sherice Gamble

Key reserve: Crystal Sutton

Biggest win: Beating Westlake after losing two in a row and confidence during the league season.

Biggest loss: To Moorpark twice, including a 41-39 nail-biter at Simi Valley.

How they got there: Finished second in the Marmonte League.

Strengths: Team defense. The Pioneers held seven teams to 35 or fewer points.

Weaknesses Still a very young team.

How far can they go?: The Pioneers were not treated kindly. A long ride to Righetti of Santa Maria would be followed by a second-round game with fourth-seeded Buena.

Intangibles: Athleticism and the steadiness of Sturdivant keep the Pioneers competitive in every game.

MOORPARK

Record, league finish: 20-2, 11-1

Coach: Brent Milburn

Key starters: Damaris Hinojosa (25.9 ppg), Emily Williams

Key reserve: Libby Cantwell

Biggest loss: Lost to Royal in the league finale. It ruined a chance at perfect 12-0 season in the team's first year in the Marmonte League.

How they got there: First place in the Marmonte League.

Strengths: Hinojosa is one of the state's best players, but Williams has kept teams from stacking defenses against Hinojosa with her play outside.

Weaknesses Not many. A tendency to rely on Hinojosa too much.

How far can they go?: The Musketeers are seeded second and should be at Long Beach State's Pyramid the first weekend in March for the Division II-AA title game.

Intangibles: The loss to Royal might have been good for the Musketeers. It shows they are vulnerable and need to be ready for every game. The proper attitude needed at playoff time.

AGOURA

Record, league finish: 11-15, 1-11, seventh place

Key starters: Maki Tagai, Katie Senkpiel, Destiny Sobel, Betsy Novack, Jennifer Lacy Jennifer Lacy (born March 21 1983) is a professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.

Lacy graduated from Agoura Hills High School in Agoura Hills, California in 2001.
 

Key reserve: Tina Beams

Biggest win: Beat Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  for its only league victory.

Biggest loss: Numerous. The Chargers struggled in league play.

Strengths: Lacy is a solid post player and Tagai runs the offense efficiently. Sekpiel is steady on offense and defense.

Weaknesses Haven't found a way to finish off teams.

How far can they go?: It will be difficult for the Chargers to advance past the first round.

Intangibles: Good senior leadership and nice yioung talent, but the Chargers are lacking in the execution part.

NEWBURY PARK

Record, league finish: 12-11, 6-6 fourth place

Coach: Nori Parvin

Key starters: Bridget Harris (10.4 ppg), Tawni Yamauchi, Oli Keohohou

Biggest win: Close game victories over Westlake and Agoura in the latter part of league play. Beat Simi Valley at home.

Biggest loss: Lost four of first six league games.

How they got there: Fourth place from the Marmonte League.

Strengths: Yamauchi distributes the ball well and Keohohou's strength is hard for opponents to defend.

Weaknesses Little depth.

How far can they go?: The Panthers have a long trip to Burroughs of Ridgecrest, but a first round victory is quite possible.

GRACE BRETHREN

Record, league finish: 14-9, 8-4, third place

Coach: Scott Nandor

Key starters: Crystal Roberts, Natalie Durso, Alex Gubser, Heidi Zigler, Katie Hunt.

How they got there: Third place in the Heritage League.

Strengths: The inside trio of Durso, Roberts and Hunt (all 6-0) make it extremely difficult for opponents to match up size wise.

Weaknesses Roberts has been back just one week from a finger injury that kept her out six weeks.

How far can they go?: The Lancers lanc·er

TODAY'S GAMES

AGOURA AT SANTIAGO/GG

Records: Agoura 11-15, 1-11; Santiago 18-7, 10-2

Santiago outlook: The Cavaliers are making their first playoff appearance since 1979. That year was well before even the oldest players on the team were born. Santiago won the Garden Grove Garden Grove, city (1990 pop. 143,050), Orange co., S Calif., a suburb of Long Beach and Los Angeles, on the Santa Ana River; founded 1877, inc. 1956. Many of its residents work in nearby aerospace and defense installations, and there is light manufacturing.  League and is led by sophomore guard Stephanie Rupena. The 5-foot-7 Rupena can also play forward and has enough leaping ability that she is successful in the post. Sega Asiata is a big scoring power forward.

Agoura advantages: Team chemistry, solid players at every position and height in the post.

Agoura disadvantages: Youth and difficulty closing out teams.

What has to happen for Agoura to win: Contributions from each player and finding a way to limit Rupena.

Directions: 101 south to 405 south to 22 east, exit at Harbor Blvd. South to Trask. Go east -1/4 of a mile. School is on the right at 12342 Trask.

LOS AMIGOS AT MOORPARK

Records: Los Amigos 9-14, 6-6; Moorpark 20-2, 11-1

Los Amigos outlook: The Lobos snuck snuck

NEWBURY PARK AT BURROUGHS/RIDGECREST

Records: Newbury Park 12-11, 6-6; Burroughs/R 15-5, 10-2

The river's source is in the San Bernardino Mountains near Hesperia. The West Fork of the Mojave flows into Silverwood Lake, formed by Cedar Springs Dam, which overflows in the Mojave River Forks Reserve
 League and have an excellent inside-outside combination in guard Courtney Pettitt (9.6 ppg) and center Krista Sappington (9.3 ppg).

Newbury Park advantages: The Panthers will have a little more athleticism than Burroughs and come from a much tougher league. Newbury Park is also a more physical team and has won four of its last six.

Newbury Park disadvantages: Inconsistency in·con·sis·ten·cy
