GIRLS' BASKETBALL: VENTURA JUST TOO TALL AN ORDER FOR SAUGUS CENTURIONS CAN'T OVERCOME HEIGHT.

VENTURA Ventura (vĕnt`rə), city (1990 pop. 92,575), seat of Ventura co., SW Calif., on the Pacific coast in a farm and oil region; inc. 1866.  -- It's not difficult to find Kali Bennett before a game. A 6-foot-5 standout for the Ventura High girls' basketball team, Bennett stands out on the court by virtue of standing up.

The Washington-bound center notched game-highs of 20 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in Ventura's 42-25 victory Saturday over Saugus in a nonleague game at Ventura High.

Bennett, rated as the No. 36 recruit in the nation by scout.com, scored 10 points in each half for Ventura (13-1). The Cougars, ranked No. 14 in the nation by maxpreps.com, dominated inside for most of the night with their significant height advantage over the Centurions (9-7).

The tallest starter for Saugus was 5-foot-10 center Gabrielle Conn. Ventura's roster includes four players who are at least 6 feet tall.

``Height is something you can't control. You either have it or you don't,'' Ventura coach Ann ANN, Scotch law. In the old law French writers, ann or rather an, signifies a year.  Larson said. ``Saugus did a good job of doubling down on Kali, but they just didn't have the height to really affect her.

in the big games. We think she's good enough to completely take over games, and we want her to be even aggressive.''

Saugus, ranked No. 11 in the area by the Daily News, fell behind 14-6 at the end of the first quarter and 24-10 at halftime. The Centurions cut Ventura's lead to 35-24 with 5:40 remaining on a 3-pointer by Conn, but that was as close as they got. Bennett responded with a layup Layup

Hart is the only team to defeat Ventura this season, having knocked off the Cougars 44-37 on Dec. 8 in the semifinals of the Buena-Kiwanis Tournament.

``Ventura was unstoppable tonight,'' Saugus coach Eric Olsson said. ``We knew they were going to be a tough team to beat, but we're happy to schedule teams like this because it makes us a stronger team when league play starts.''
