One team had to give Monday night, and the Panthers made sure it wasn't them while holding off a late rally for a 60-52victory over the Musketeers in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park High. Sophomore point guard Sidney Dobner scored a team-high 14 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, and Doris Park-Sherman had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Newbury Park (11-5, 4-0), which won despite giving up a 14-point second half lead to the Musketeers (14-2, 3-1). ``Fortunately for us, our shots were falling early, because Moorpark made an impressive run there at the end of the game,'' Newbury Park coach Nori Parvin said. ``Moorpark is a very good team, and they gave us a pretty big scare there.'' The Panthers, whose leading scorer Arlene Harris (torn MCL MCL - Macintosh Common LISP ) is out for the remainder of the season, took a 12-0 lead four minutes into the game on a 17-foot jump shot by Alison Turley. The point guard made five free throws and twolayups in the final quarter. Lauren Carter added ninepoints and a game-high 17rebounds for the Musketeers. kevin.connelly@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607 |
