``Personally, I just wasn't mentally ready for varsity, but physically I was,'' Hamilton said. ``If I would have moved up last year, I would have been by myself. The JV team became a family, and we moved up together.''

Canyon coach Paul Broneer was tempted to promote Hamilton, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, and Bellardo, a 5-2 senior guard, to the varsity last season. But he would have had to cut two of his eight seniors that had been in the program for three seasons.

He kept Hamilton and Bellardo on the junior varsity, where they played just about every minute instead of 10 to 15 minutes on the varsity.

``I don't believe in having a freshman and sophomore on the varsity unless they are going to play loads of minutes,'' Broneer said. ``They just need to develop confidence. Their intensity level and confidence has just skyrocketed and carried over into this year.''

Bellardo said playing on a travel team with Hamilton over the summer contributed to her preparation for this season.

``We know what each other's needs are,'' Bellardo said. ``We have better chemistry together. I would rather improve on a team where I can get more playing time than sitting on a bench on varsity.''

Hamilton and Bellardo have been on the court most of the time this season for Canyon (6-5), which is playing in the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  tournament this week.

The steady play of Hamilton and Bellardo have complemented junior point guard Erica Doyle and senior center Ashley Palmer, the team's leading scorers.

``We all thought that we could play varsity level last year, but we just wanted to improve regardless of what level,'' Bellardo said.

Broneer called Hamilton and Bellardo the team's top defensive players. ``When we're on the court and it's starting to get intense, I look to her to calm me down,'' Hamilton said. ``I think of her as a personal coach on the floor.''
