GIRLS' BASKETBALL: BURROUGHS CAN'T STOP MUIR MUIR 48, BURROUGHS 33.

Byline: KEVIN CONNELLY Kevin Connelly was born in Middlesbrough, England. He is an impressionist comedian, and after dinner speaker and is probably most famous for his role on the popular BBC television programme 'Dead Ringers'.  Special to the Daily News

BURBANK -- For five minutes Friday night, it appeared the Burroughs High of Burbank girls' basketball team was the class of the Pacific League.

That distinction has belonged to Muir of Pasadena for the past three seasons, but it was the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

Eliza Pierre scored a team-high 12 points, including 11 in the second half, and Chrishawn Friersen added ninepoints as Muir overcame a slow start for a 48-33 victory at Burroughs High.

Muir (22-1 overall, 12-0 Pacific), ranked No. 17 in the state by calpreps.com, outscored Burroughs 29-15 in the second half.

Burroughs (20-5, 10-2) led 17-13 with 3:37 remaining in the second quarter, but couldn't maintain the lead against the athletically superior Mustangs.

``Burroughs is a very good team,'' Muir coach Gary Johnson Gary Johnson may refer to:

said. ``They played us tough tonight, just like we expected.''

Kourtney Zilbert recorded game highs of 13 points and 19 rebounds for the Indians despite missing key minutes because of foul trouble. Muir began its decisive rally in the closing minutes of the first half with Zilbert on the bench with two fouls.

Burroughs, ranked No. 4 in the area by the Daily News, cut a 35-23 fourth-quarter deficit to four with 3:44 remaining on a pair of free throws by Nicole Nichols. The Indians made a defensive stop on the next possession, but could not close the gap as Muir ended the game on a 13-2 run.

``It was disappointing to see the game get away from us,'' Zilbert said. ``We played well in stretches, but Muir deserved to win. They're a talented, physical team.''

Muir clinched at least a share of its third consecutive Pacific League title with the win. With two games remaining in the regular season, second-place Burroughs needs Muir to lose out to remain mathematically alive for a share of the title.

The likelihood of that happening is slim, however, considering the two teams left on Muir's schedule are a combined 14-33 on the season.
