GIRL SCOUTS HELP FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER.Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer PALMDALE - The gift boxes and decorations from the holidays are a memory, but a Palmdale Girl Scout Troop is trying to keep the spirit of giving going throughout the year with a campaign to establish a reserve for local food banks. Troop 639 has kicked off its food drive called Grains of Love to gather nonperishable food for Grace Resource Center in Lancaster and South Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. The goal is to build up a month's reserve of food for each organization instead of them getting by from month to month and having to turn people away when the supply runs out. ``We want to help them have a reserve built up so that they can help those in need and still have supplies to fall back on,'' said the troop's spokesman, Mark Taylor People known as Mark Taylor include:

On Feb. 5, girls from the troop will spend from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of each of the stores asking people to donate one or more things from their baskets or to buy an extra item while inside to donate. All the gathered supplies will be given to the food banks the following day. ``We've never had to solicit for food before,'' said troop leader Christine Moore. ``We are hoping for a great turnout but that will all depend on whether the people we talk to feel like giving. Hopefully, we will have a great response because each year we try to do just a little bit better so it will give us something to shoot for next year.'' The drive itself was mentioned as a possible troop project in the Girl Scout Leader's Guide Book but with a slightly different goal. The Grains of Love drive was only to collect grains for shelters but Moore thought a broader list would be more beneficial to the food banks and those they help. ``This is just our way of trying to make our community better and to teach these girls why giving back is so important,'' Moore said. |
