Staff Writer PLAYER OF THE YEAR COURTNEY SCHULTZ Senior, middle blocker, Harvard-Westlake The three-year nightmare is finally over for opponents of Harvard-Westlake of Studio City because Courtney Schultz will never again hit a ball for the Wolverines. Schultz concluded what has to be considered one of the most impressive high school careers in region girls' volleyball history with a second consecutive Division III
Division III (or DIII) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States. state championship. She is the Daily News' Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Schultz's talents earned her a scholarship offer to Stanford before this season began, but she did not lack for motivation. Harvard-Westlake finished 21-2 and the Wolverines' only losses came when Schultz was sidelined with a nagging back injury. In the state final against El Molino of Forestville, Schultz had a team-high 17 kills and served match point in the three-game victory. JENNIFER GEISBAUER Senior, middle blocker, La Canada The Spartans had as many as four sophomores in the regular rotation this season, so Geisbauer provided some much-needed leadership to a perennially strong team. She was injured in·jure tr.v. in·jured, in·jur·ing, in·jures 1. To cause physical harm to; hurt. 2. HALA HADAWAR Junior, outside hitter, Van Nuys Hadawar provided one of the great memories of the season with her tremendous play in the fourth and fifth games of the City Section championship, when she rallied the Wolves to the school's first upper-division title. She is also the section's co-Player of the Year. KARALYN KUCHENBECKER Senior, outside hitter, Harvard-Westlake A three-time Daily News first-team selection, Kuchenbecker provided the perfect complement to Schultz on the outside and was also one of the area's top defensive players. She provided great leadership and leaves with three Southern Section championships. BRENN LARSON Senior, setter/outside hitter, Westlake Larson made the often-tedious transition to setter setter: see sporting dog. setter Any of three breeds derived from a medieval hunting dog that would set (lie down) when it found birds so that it and the birds could be covered with a net. Her advanced skills helped a team that often struggled to find a rhythm and she led the surprising Highlanders to the Division I-A semifinals. TERBRIE TAYLOR Senior, middle blocker, Harvard-Westlake Taylor showed some of her enormous potential this season, particularly on defense as she became a full-time player for the first time. She gave the already-strong Wolverines a second dominating middle blocker, which made them almost impossible to match up against. COACH OF THE YEAR JESS QUIROZ Harvard-Westlake The Wolverines were a spirited bunch, full of personality and laughs, and Quiroz knew just how to handle the team to keep it focused on defending its state championship. Even late-season injuries to Kuchenbecker, Schultz and setter Alex Dunphy didn't hurt Harvard-Westlake too much, and Quiroz deserves credit for keeping the team on track. A LOOK AHEAD Teams to watch: Many of the traditionally strong programs lose a lot of seniors to graduation, so next season could be the time for an upstart to make some noise. Will Reinhart has slowly built a strong program at Verdugo Hills, but Van Nuys will be among the favorites in the City Section again. Harvard-Westlake will naturally dip, but if the Wolverines can find a strong middle blocker, they won't fall far. Outside hitter Devin O'Fallon could have a breakthrough senior season. Players to watch: Great middle blockers don't usually come out of the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. The Antelope Valley , but Kristen Voyson goes against that precedent. Harvard-Westlake setter Alex Dunphy will miss Kuchenbecker, Schultz and Taylor but should be strong again. Westlake's Jessica Harper has the potential to be one of the region's most dominant players. Quartz Hill dominated the league and made strides under second-year coach Larry Vocke. --2. Saugus came into the season as the favorite in the Foothill League, but the Centurions also made a nice playoff run and reached the quarterfinals for the first time in six seasons, a year after they missed the playoffs. Julie Bolt was one of the region's best setters and led a deep team that played to its potential. --3. Sylmar was expected to be down after its City Section championship in 2000, but the Spartans hung tough all season and reached the semifinals. Outside hitter Sally Teague and middle blocker Katrina Delaney led the way for Sylmar. Biggest disappointments --1. Chatsworth entered the season as the clear favorite to win the City Section championship, which is usually something of a kiss of death kiss of death gangsters’ farewell ritual before murdering victim. Setter Carlie Allison and hitters Heather Rizzo and Linda Wang performed well, but the Chancellors could not pass the ball and fell to Van Nuys in the semifinals in five games. --2. Colette Ramirez and Leslie Smith developed into one of the region's most feared hitting combinations, but the Indians lost to too many teams they should have beaten. --3.
