Byline: Compiled by Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

ASHLEY FARRAR, Sr., Outside Hitter, Grace Brethren

On a team of young standouts, Farrar provided senior leadership and a dynamic offensive flair in leading the Lancers lanc·er

Farrar, who was home-schooled until arriving at Grace Brethren her sophomore year, usually was the best player on the court, using her leaping ability and powerful hitting to control matches.

Farrar never was better than during the Lancers' memorable title run. She missed the first two rounds with a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn.  but returned just in time, dominating Riverside Christian in the semifinals and Laguna Blanca This article is about the body of water. ``I was hurting, but all I was focused on was winning the championship,'' Farrar said.

FIRST TEAM

BRITTANY COLLETTE, Sr., Setter, Newbury Park

Collette wasn't just one of the region's top setters, she also was the most prophetic. At the beginning of the season she predicted Newbury Park was good enough to finally compete against - and beat - Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. True to her word, Collette led the Panthers to the league title. She was adept at spreading the ball around to the Panthers' top hitters and assumed a leadership role during her senior year.

DANIELLE FERNANDES, Sr., Middle Blocker, Taft

Fernandes was one of the region's most dynamic players, dominating teams with her blocking and hitting. And nobody looked more intimidating than Fernandes with her size and colorful afro. She missed the final three weeks of the season because of shin splints Shin Splints Definition

, and when she returned for Taft of Woodland Hills' City Section semifinal against Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). , she wasn't nearly at full strength in the loss. Fernandes will play next year at Arizona State on a full scholarship.

COURTNEY HOLEMAN, Sr., Outside Hitter, Moorpark

The Musketeers got to the playoffs with an at-large berth thanks to Holeman, to whom opposing coaches continually pointed as one of the region's best players. At times, the power-hitting outside hitter was unstoppable, using her jumping ability and hitting to either keep the Musketeers in matches or lead them to upsets. Holeman is headed to Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

KELLEY KAPLAN, Sr., Outside Hitter, Granada Hills

Everything went right for Kaplan this year until the Highlanders' loss to Palisades in the City Championship final. But even in defeat, the hard- hitting Kaplan was impressive, keeping the Highlanders in the match. Behind her, Granada Hills tied Taft of Woodland Hills for the West Valley League title, then upset undefeated Sylmar in the City semifinals.

JULIE RUBENSTEIN, Jr., Outside Hitter, Oaks Christian

Rubenstein is the favorite to earn Player of the Year honors next season. The 6-foot-3 hitter already has committed to play at Pepperdine, and when she gets there the Waves will be getting a skilled, athletic and powerful hitter who can dominate matches. Rubenstein led Oaks Christian of Westlake Village to second place in the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. Under first-year coach Shannon Tuttle and the inspired Matthess, the Knights of Sherman Oaks fell short of their goal to win the Mission League title. But they did beat Harvard-Westlake of Studio City twice in league play for the first time in school history and advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section Div. III-A playoffs. Matthess was a key factor, with her crisp sets Crisp Sets

 and intelligent decision-making.

COACH OF THE YEAR

RYAN GORDON, Grace Brethren

Gordon took over at Grace Brethren of Simi Valley three years ago and his impact has been immediate. Last year the Lancers advanced to the Div. V-AA semifinals, where they were upset by Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian. This year, Gordon put pressure on Grace Brethren to win the championship, preparing them for the pressure of the playoffs by putting together a difficult preseason schedule against bigger schools. In effect, he traded losses for experience.

The plan worked. In the playoffs, Grace Brethren looked prepared and poised, especially during tight matches when they closed teams out with focused play down the stretch.

Grace Brethren also advanced to the second round of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Match of the Year

Grace Brethren of Simi Valley went five sets to beat Laguna Blanca of Santa Barbara 25-21, 24-26, 25-17, 21-25, 15-12 and win the Southern Section Div. V-AA championship, and with each passing point the drama grew heavier.

``I don't even know what to say right now. This is just an incredible feeling,'' Grace Brethren outside hitter Lizzi Orona said after the match. ``We all worked so hard for this. It's amazing.''

Keep your eyes on ...

Van Nuys, which came into the season as the two-time defending City Section champion, spent the year cultivating its young talent and looking at next season. Outside hitter Brittanee Brooks will be one of the region's top players.

Also, Oaks Christian of Woodland Hills, with the dynamic Julie Rubenstein, will be a force, as will Grace Brethren of Simi Valley, which returns everyone but outside hitter Ashley Farrar.

Biggest Surprises

Hart of Newhall has long been a disappointment in the Foothill League behind Valencia, Canyon and Saugus. But all that changed this year under first-year coach Gerritt Maxwell, who took over after working as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, which was cut by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. . The Indians made immediate improvements, rising to a first-place tie with Valencia after beating the Vikings in their last regular-season meeting. The Indians' future looks bright - Maxwell made a point of working with his lower-level teams during practice to help implement his system.
