GIRL'S SOCCER: VALENCIA GIRLS ALL AT SEA AFTER LOSS.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Nothing like a day of fishing to cure a bunch of broken hearts Broken Hearts is a blank verse play by W. S. Gilbert in three acts styled "An entirely original fairy play". It opened at the Royal Court Theatre in London on December 9 1875. .

That's what Valencia High girls' soccer coach Tony Scalercio hopes to accomplish Saturday when he takes his players on a deep-sea fishing deep-sea fishing npesca d'alto mare  trip out of Port Hueneme Port Hueneme (wī'nē`mē), city (1990 pop. 20,319), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1870, inc. 1948. It has an artificial deep-sea harbor and is the site of a huge naval construction-battalion (Seabee) center. .

``It's important that we do things together as a team,'' Scalercio said Tuesday after the Vikings lost 2-0 at Canyon in a Foothill League showdown.

The match was important. Valencia dropped out of first place and Canyon moved into a tie for first with Hart. It was an emotional game throughout the 80 minutes and the players were drained at the end. But Scalercio repeatedly told his team, ``This is not the end of the world.''

``I've always said this. I was hard on the kids tonight as far as the intensity and I expected them to be intense. This was a very intense game,'' Scalercio said.

``But you know what? It truly is about having fun in high school. And I want them to have a good time and for it to be enjoyable.''

Valencia is winning far more than it's losing; the Vikings are 16-3-2 overall. They're in the middle of a difficult stretch of games against Canyon, Saugus today and Hart on Tuesday. Those three teams take a 3-1-2 league record into today's matches.

``When we leave the field, we shouldn't be dwelling on a game that we lost,'' Scalercio said. ``We should be looking forward to our next game, which we will. We'll go back to practice . . . and continue to go forward and try to be successful in league.''

 Hart twice and Canyon once.

Saugus' lone league defeat was to Valencia, which plays host to the Centurions today.

``They're a formidable opponent. We're not going to take them for granted and (will) play as hard we can to see if we can come out with a win,'' Scalercio said.

--Rising star: Playing on the freshman level became too easy for Canyon's Alysia Johnson, who scored more than 20 goals before moving up to the junior varsity team For the American rock band, see .

In sports, usually at the high school and college levels, members of a team who are not the main players in a competition (such as a football or basketball game) are called junior varsity players.
.

Johnson didn't last long at that level, either; she's now on the varsity and giving her team a spark. She subbed into Tuesday's victory over Valencia.

``She's extremely fast. She'll probably be Canyon's track star this year,'' Canyon coach Gregg Cohen cohen

said. ``Her speed definitely is a weapon, but it's her heart. She will fight for everything. We're trying to get in the groove. We're hoping it just gives us another weapon.''

Canyon's victory over Valencia was needed after ties against Hart and Saugus. The return of Vicky Duffy, who suffered an ankle sprain ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  in the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  tournament, was another lift in the Valencia game.

``When we're hitting, we have the weapons to get it done,'' Cohen said.

--Desert storm: Desert Christian of Lancaster is beginning to turn some heads among small schools. The Knights are 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the High Desert League.

Deann Matteson has been the Knights' top player. She scored all of her team's goals in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Desert.

--Going for the Golden: Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
went just 1-8-1 and was last in the Golden League last year. But the Antelopes entered the second half of league play this season in contention for a postseason berth.

The Antelopes have been boosted by senior transfer Chrystal Sheldrick, a transfer from Quartz Hill.

A.V. has losses to Quartz Hill, Palmdale and Lancaster and has a tough second half ahead of it, including Tuesday's match against defending champion Quartz Hill.

But whatever happens, the Antelopes have a bright future with strikers Marissa Webb and Sara Sichley among a large group of underclass players returning.
