GIRL'S SOCCER: THE CENTER OF ATTENTION LANCASTER SOCCER TEAM GETS ITS DIRECTION FROM FRESHMAN PRIETO.

Lancaster girls' soccer coach Rick Acuna finally got his wish this season - a scrappy scrap·py 1

It appears to be a good fit.

The 5-foot-3 freshman has scored 13 goals and helped lead a balanced attack for the Eagles (13-8 overall, 5-1 Golden League), who are contending for the league title.

``In the past, our teams have struggled as far as the center-midfield position is concerned,'' Acuna said. ``She is just what we needed to solidify so·lid·i·fy

``Coach Acuna wanted to give everyone a chance to play,'' Prieto said. ``We were winning so it didn't matter.''

Prieto, who's played since she was 4, is enjoying her first year of high school soccer, especially because she didn't think she'd be starting.

Acuna said the addition of Prieto has allowed the team to have a balanced attack. With three-time all-Golden League forward Laci Fults in front and all-league defender Julie Thomas in the back, the Eagles are strong in all three areas of the field.

``There are other players who have important roles on our team,'' Acuna said. ``But (Prieto, Fults and Thomas) are the key players at each of the main positions. (Prieto's) addition has allowed us to be very strong.''

Prieto says her success as a freshman is in part due to the support she gets from her teammates, especially close friends Thomas and Stephanie Meek meek

``It's a lot easier playing with someone like (Prieto) in front of me,'' said Thomas, who has played club soccer with Prieto in the past. ``It's good to have someone that has the same desire to win as I do.
