The team with the best reason to dislike the Southern Section's new 10-win rule isn't bemoaning getting omitted from the girls' basketball playoffs.

``About two weeks ago, I decided that if we didn't finish at least third in league, I wouldn't even apply for an at-large spot,'' Canyon High coach Paul Broneer said. ``I went to the girls and asked them, and they said they didn't think they would deserve it.''

came within one game of third place but lost in overtime to Burroughs on the final day of the season. Canyon fell one short of the minimum 10 victories and became the only Foothill League team to miss the playoffs this season.

``I don't think 10 wins should get you an automatic ticket to the playoffs,'' Broneer said. ``I think it's a way for CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. Broneer's fear, and that of other coaches, is that teams will water down their nonleague schedules in an attempt to get as many victories as possible early on, therefore lessening the importance of league play.

``Why even play league games then? I think it should just be first, second and third from each league,'' Broneer said. ``You look at Burroughs and they had 10 wins before league even started. They could have gone 0-10 in league and still made the playoffs.

``And one of their wins was against Buena's JV team. Now it's not their fault they had to play a JV team, but why should one team get punished for losing to Buena and another get credit for beating Buena's JV team?''

--On the warpath: A month ago, Hart coach Dave Munroe was trying to prevent his team's season from becoming a complete disaster.

Hart, which won only one of its first five league games, has won five of its last six games, including four of five in league, and reached the playoffs with the league's third-place berth.

A second-round battle with Ventura, which lost only one game this season, looms in the second round, but even that isn't enough to upset Munroe.

``As a third-place team, we are pretty pleased to get a home game in the first round because honestly, I thought we would get a team like Ventura or Buena in the first round,'' Munroe said. ``We've made some adjustments, some things different, and we're excited about this opportunity.''

Ventura beat Hart 85-45 in the Buena tournament earlier this season, but Munroe said the Indians wouldn't shy away from Verb 1. shy away from - avoid having to deal with some unpleasant task; "I shy away from this task"

``We've already watched that tape a couple times,'' Munroe said. ``It wouldn't be easy to play Ventura, because they are obviously shooting for the semifinals or quarterfinals at least, but I think it would be great for our younger girls to get a look at a team like that, in a situation like that, so they can be at the level someday some·day

The Indians were one of the league's youngest teams, with only one senior, guard Christina Sanchez, playing a significant role. Freshman point guard Amanda Patton was among the league's best players, and Munroe has called up Whitney Downen from the freshman team for the playoffs.

``And she will play, too,'' Munroe said. ``She's a big body and she's come a long way this season. As far as Amanda, she has a ton of experience at the AAU AAU

``The thing about Amanda is that she works so hard, she's always giving it everything she has in practice. She gives the same effort in practice that she gives in games.''
