GIRL' SOCCER PLAYOFFS: Q.H. TO FACE OLD FOE HART INDIANS WITHOUT SANGUINETTI.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Quartz Hill High's girls' soccer season has come full circle.

The Rebels had high hopes entering this year after a run to the Southern Section Division II quarterfinals. But entering an early-season home match against Hart, Quartz Hill was suffering from Foothill League fever.

Canyon and Valencia had beaten the Rebels and Saugus tied Quartz Hill. A fourth consecutive Foothill opponent, Hart, was favored to make it eight consecutive league championships.

But host Quartz Hill stunned stun

the Indians 2-0. The Golden League champion Rebels (18-2-1) haven't lost since, cruising to a 10-0 league record.

Quartz Hill and Hart (12-6-5) meet again in a Division II opener on Friday at Quartz Hill at 3 p.m.

The key could be whether the teams get production from players other than high-scoring senior forwards, Ali Pavoni of Hart and Kellie Cox of Quartz Hill. Both have earned Division I scholarships - Pavoni to Pepperdine and Cox to Cal State Fullerton - but the Indians will be without a key weapon.

Midfielder DeeDee Sanguinetti, a fierce competitor who signed with Long Beach State, must sit out the match after getting a red card in Hart's last game. Senior midfielder Sarah Dean was also red-carded and can't play.

The Rebels should have the advantage with returning All-Southern Section pick Andrea Cabriales at midfield.

In other local matches:

--Thousand Oaks at Lancaster (Division II first round, Friday at 3 p.m.): An even matchup of teams that finished second in their respective leagues.

The Eagles supplanted Highland as Quartz Hill's biggest competition, though Lancaster lost a late-season match to Highland during a two-game losing skid.

The Eagles have one of the region's best and underrated scorers in senior Laci Fults.

Eagles coach Rick Acuna is excited about the future with midfielder Kathleen Prieto around another three years. Prieto has been a nice complement to Fults.

Highland at Arcadia (Division I first round, Friday at 3 p.m.): Highland played much better in the second half of the Golden League season, but the Bulldogs must play the top-seeded Apaches Apaches

Arcadia is not only the best team in the Southern Section but one of the country's elite. The Apaches are ranked second in the FoxStudentSports.com national poll.

--Bishop Union at Paraclete (Division IV first round, Friday at 3 p.m.): The Spirits struggled last year after a 1999 semifinal appearance.

But behind high-scoring Tracey Schuster, the Spirits won the Alpha League championship and should get past High Desert League runnerup Bishop.

But the Vikings don't want that to be the only thing they remember fondly about the season.

Although Division II is loaded with talent, the Vikings (18-3-2) are in Division I, which had a handful of quality teams drop to Division II.
