LUSINE Danakian, 17, of Van Nuys is one among the 23 honorees chosen from 5,000 to win Infusium 23 Women in Science Awards.

Danakian is a senior at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School is an Armenian-American private school located in Los Angeles, California, USA, and while historically consisting of a large Western Armenian population, has in recent years seen children of Eastern Armenian immigrants particularly from Armenia  in Hollywood where she takes advanced courses in biology and chemistry.

She has created award-winning math and science projects on the relationship between conductivity and temperature in electrolytes, on the accelerated aging Accelerated aging is a testing method used to estimate the useful lifespan of a product when actual lifespan data is unavailable. This occurs with products that have not existed long enough to have gone through their useful lifespan: for example, a new type of car engine or a new  of aspirin, on finite geometries and on a statistical approach to the modeling of cell adhesion Cellular adhesion is the binding of a cell to another cell or to a surface or matrix. Cellular adhesion is regulated by specific adhesion molecules that interact with molecules on the opposing cell or surface. .

Lusine is a member of the Research Training Program of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Junior Academy of Science and her research results on cell adhesion modeling will be published in the April issue of Experimental Biology.

The $1,000 grants are awarded to help the winners pursue their career goals in science.

The high school senior plans a career as a clinical researcher in the field of molecular biology molecular biology, scientific study of the molecular basis of life processes, including cellular respiration, excretion, and reproduction. The term molecular biology was coined in 1938 by Warren Weaver, then director of the natural sciences program at the Rockefeller  and has already been accepted at the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20.  in Pasadena.

Johnna Doyle, manager of research and development at Infusium and chairwoman of the program, says the huge response to the program shows that women are understanding the importance of science and the differences they can make in the field.

``Infusium 23 established this awards program to encourage young women to look at science beyond a specific science project that might earn them a merit badge, and to embrace career choices in science that have traditionally been categorized as male.''

A 60-hour training program will equip volunteers who will be certified as rape crisis advocates by the California State Office of Criminal Justice Planning.

Volunteers also will be deployed to hospitals, police stations or court buildings to provide emotional support and information to victims.

CSUN's Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling has sponsored the Valley Trauma Center in Northridge since 1984.

A second center will be established in Santa Clarita in coming weeks.

Last year, the center's staff responded to more than 3,000 hotline calls and provided counseling and support to about 750 clients, according to Patti Dengler, program director.

The center made more than 400 assault prevention and education presentations.

Anyone over 18 can apply for the upcoming training sessions scheduled for March. For information, call (818) 772-0196.
