GIRL, 16, KILLED WHEN DIPLOMAT CRASHES VEHICLE.

A teen-ager died when a speeding car driven by an east European diplomat smashed into another, which catapulted through the air and landed on top of the vehicle the girl was in, police said Saturday.

Police said a car driven by Gueorgui Makharadze In January of 1997, Gueorgui Makharadze, the deputy ambassador of the Republic of Georgia in Washington caused an accident that injured four people and killed a sixteen-year-old girl. Investigators said alcohol also was involved but gave no details.

Secret Service spokesman Marty Ratchford said the diplomat is a minister at the Georgia Embassy. Police said Makharadze was hospitalized in fair condition.

The driver of the car the Waltrick girl was in was reported in fair condition at a nearby hospital, where drivers of the other two cars were treated and released.

No charges have been filed. The Police Department said it was consulting the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Misha Siamashvili, a spokesman for the embassy, would not confirm the diplomat's identity but said he has diplomatic immunity A principle of International Law that provides foreign diplomats with protection from legal action in the country in which they work.
