A 15-year-old girl was raped in her home by a knife-wielding intruder in what police said Monday might be the sixth such sexual assault since September 1996.

The assailant, described only as in his 20s, entered the unlocked home near Tapo Canyon Road and Cochran Street shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, and attacked the girl while her family slept nearby, police said. A search by police, including K-9 units and a sheriff's helicopter, failed to locate the intruder, who fled on foot.

``There are certain similarities, and certain dissimilarities. All that has to be evaluated before detectives can make a determination that there is a link,'' he said.

With the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), division of the U.S. Dept. of Justice charged with investigating all violations of federal laws except those assigned to some other federal agency.  and the California Department of Justice, Simi Valley police developed a profile last year describing probable physical and emotional characteristics of the assailant.

``It's hard to know what motivates a person like this,'' Adams said. ``And no two crimes are absolutely identical. But if there are enough likenesses, we'll try to link them.''

Although Simi Valley has been identified by the FBI as the nation's safest city, police said residents still need to lock their doors, use window shades and take other precautions to remain secure.

``We're the safest city statistically, but we're not immune to crime,'' Adams said. ``It's nice to think of this as a rural community where you can leave your doors and windows Doors and Windows is a multimedia disk by the Irish band The Cranberries. Track listing

Before Sunday's crime, there were four other assaults and one rape. The victims were all 18 to 23 years old.

The rape occurred Sept. 2, 1996, when a woman was attacked by an intruder while her family slept nearby. On Sept. 26, 1996, an attempted rape was reported by another woman.

On Jan. 14, 1997, a 21-year-old woman awakened about 3:35 a.m. when a man placed his hand over her mouth and tried to assault her. The woman resisted and the attacker fled.

Following a June 14 sexual assault, police announced that they were seeking a single suspect. No details of that crime were available.

Police now suspect that a June 1996 break-in, in which an intruder was chased off by a young woman, might be linked to the assailant.

``There are enough similarities to make it believe that it's related,'' said Sgt. Andy McCluskey.

In 1996, there were 12 rapes in Simi Valley, while 148 rapes occurred countywide.

No figures were available for 1997.

``A rape not only affects the person it happened to, it affects the people related to that person,'' Lawson said. ``We counsel all of them.''
