GIORDANO HAS SUPPORT : FRESHMEN GIVING SAUGUS A BIG LIFT.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Nicole Giordano is the most important player on the Saugus High School Saugus High School may refer to:

softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team. But the key to the team defending its Foothill League title rides on a group of freshmen.

Julie Watson, shortstop Sonia Zapata, center fielder Kelly Cornelison and left fielder Katie Hoggatt have contributed heavily to the Centurions' 12-5 start and have helped take some of the load off Giordano's shoulders.

``We're doing just about where I'd thought we'd be, maybe a little bit better,'' coach Ron Hilton said.

Giordano, the Daily News Player of the Year who has committed to Arizona, has done plenty. As a pitcher, she has a 0.55 ERA and hasn't given up an earned run earned run

``Julie's a tremendous second hitter,'' Hilton said. ``She can bunt Nicole (to the next base). She can bunt for base hits, so we're not sacrificing much.''

Zapata (.280) is a slick fielder, as is Cornelison (.250). Hoggatt shares time in left field and rarely bats.

``The freshmen are playing very well, and we're OK,'' Hilton said.

A look at the rest of the league:

Hart (12-3): The Indians also have had youth serve them. Freshman Amanda Fortune led her team to the Hart tournament title and to a win over Saugus in the Woodbridge tournament. She's 12-2 with a 1.27 ERA.

``Amanda's done everything we've asked her to do,'' coach Al Weil said.

Center fielder Chris Chao and shortstop Jackie Bailey Jackie Bailey was an Irish soccer player during the 1970s.

have provided much of the offense. Chao is hitting .351 with a home run and a triple. Bailey's .326 average is 163 points better than last year. She also has two doubles and a triple.

``Jackie has vastly improved this year,'' Weil said. ``She is really in a zone.''

Valencia (8-7): The big difference from last year is that the defense makes the plays. The errors are down and the easy innings are up. Shortstop Nicole Giampaolo has improved tremendously, coach Donna Lee Donna Lee is a bebop jazz standard itself based on the chord changes of the traditional jazz standard "(Back Home Again in) Indiana".[1] It is named after the now-obscure bassist Donna Lee.  said.

The hitting is there, with Jennifer Edwards batting .440 with three home runs, Kim Mutaw batting .368 and Melanie Williams Melanie Williams is a United Kingdom based singer.  pitcher (she averages a walk and three strikeouts a game), but she keeps the ball around the strike zone. Plus, the defense makes plays.

Canyon (4-9): Not playing a game in two weeks gave players time to heal. Junior Danielle Fiddler was batting .429 until she hurt her knee. She will play today. Catcher Hilary Shaw developed a sore arm and moved to first base. Justina Kuhaku, a natural catcher, replaced her.

Hitting hasn't been the team's problem. Beside Fiddler, Shaw and Kuhaku are batting better than .420, and outfielder Kim Stone is at .313. But putting the hits together to manufacture runs has been difficult.

Freshman pitcher Nicole Furuya pitched a no-hitter this year, but she will sit in favor of senior Lisa Villasenor, who will face Saugus today after recovering from a knee injury.

Burroughs (10-5): Dani Morris, who has signed with Cal State Northridge, is batting .423 with seven stolen bases, three doubles, a home run and eight RBI RBI
