GINIE is an Accompanying Measure funded under the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the European Community aimed at developing the European Geographic Information Strategy and contributing to geographic information (GI) capacity building and awareness in Europe. GINIE has focused on building government and industry reference communities and on developing approaches to geospatial information sharing See data conferencing. and geoprocessing interoperability. GINIE activities, begun in November 2001, will culminate in the GINIE Final Conference. The GINIE consortium partners are: European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission Institute for Environment and Sustainability The Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) is a specialised institute of the Joint Research Centre directorate of the European Commission, based at Ispra, Italy. - Land Management Unit, Open GIS Consortium (Europe), and the University of Sheffield The University of Sheffield is a research university, located in Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. Reputation Sheffield was the Sunday Times University of the Year in 2001 and has consistently appeared as their top 20 institutions. , Sheffield Centre for Geographic Information and Spatial Analysis. All those attending the conference will receive a copy of the "GINIE Book" that has been compiled from documents prepared for GINIE activities. The book distribution supports a GINIE goal of disseminating its project findings to wider audiences. It also sets the GINIE Partners' common vision for GI in Europe and the strategy, objectives, and implementation plan necessary to make this happen. At the conference there will also be presentations from key actors in geospatial technology who work in research, industry and government.
