Batesole, in his third season at CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge , led a rag-tag team of junior college transfers and reserves to a 37-19 record despite losing the majority of his players to other schools after the baseball program was cut over the summer. The Matadors started the season losing 17 of their first 39 games but regrouped to win 25 of their final 27, beating teams like Cal State Fullerton, UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX and College World Series participant Long Beach State. Gillespie, who coached at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. before taking over at USC in 1987, led the Trojans to the College World Series title for the first time in 20 years, fighting through the losers' bracket to beat Arizona State 21-14 in the championship game.
