GILBERTO'S STILL THE BOSSA BUT NOT IN FULL COMMAND.

However, sound problems plagued the performance throughout much of the evening, and Gilberto was visibly upset, talking about it (mostly in Portuguese) to the audience and the stagehands - who seemed out there almost every other song trying to remedy the situation.

(In fairness to the Bowl personnel, Gilberto reportedly did not show up for the sound check.)

Not a dynamic performer, Gilberto sits quietly on stage, accompanying himself on guitar. There's no backup band A backing band or backup band is a band which accompanies an artist at a live performance or on a recording. This can either be an established group or an ad hoc group assembled for the purpose. Such groups are often made up of session musicians. , and his vocals, though subtly expressive and nuanced, barely seem above a whisper. Amazingly, the audience was incredibly quiet and respectful re·spect·ful

 as they strained to listen. Despite a few good moments, much of the audience wasn't happy at the end of what they had hoped would be a magic night.

But neither was Gilberto, who offered no encore.
