The shine was definitely back at the Rise and Shine Preschool, part of Valley Community Church. Smiles on the teachers were almost as bright as the new playground equipment hosting its first play group.

Earlier this year, the faces around the school were less than sunny. Vandals broke into the school in January and stole a Sparkletts water bottle where donations toward a new playground had been collecting. The thieves took only the bottle and money, leaving behind electronics and other items, baffling baf·fle

A Daily News report about the break-in prompted a response no one anticipated.

``We estimate we lost about $1,200 to $1,500 in the bottle when it was stolen,'' playground project manager Alicia Garcia said. ``People brought in donations of $16,000 and donated goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Garcia said the playground unveiled Wednesday morning cost the school about $50,000. Design, construction and landscaping were donated and many materials were purchased at cost.

``Be careful, I'm gonna kick you,'' she shouted to a visitor who stepped too close. Her friend, Leah Mikaeili, 5, leaned back as she soared, her dark hair trailing behind in the wind as little boys zoomed past on the tricycle path.

Leah's mom, Alice, works at the school and nodded her approval as she watched the children enjoying the new playground.

``They've been waiting for this for so long,'' she said. ``Every day, they ask when can we go out, when is it done. It's very nice.''

The preschool is still accepting donations toward the playground project and is running various fundraisers to meet the expenses. Donations may be made by sending them to Rise and Shine Preschool, 25222 Wiley Canyon Road, Newhall, CA 91321 or calling (661) 259-0407.
