GIANTS NOTEBOOK: MAGOWAN: IT'S NOT JUST BONDS, BAKER.

Byline: Gabe Lacques Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - San Francisco Giants The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball team based in San Francisco, California that currently play in the National League West Division. New York Giants history
Early days and the John McGraw era
managing partner Peter Magowan Peter A. Magowan (born 1942 [1]) is the managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants Major League Baseball franchise. Magowan, along with a group of investors, purchased the franchise on January 12, 1993 from the previous owner, Bob Lurie.  said he's tired of Barry Bonds Barry Lamar Bonds (born July 24 1964 in Riverside, California) is a left fielder for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. He is the son of former major league All-Star Bobby Bonds, the godson of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, and a distant cousin of Hall of Famer Reggie  and Dusty Baker

receiving all the credit for his team's success. And he's tired of the talk surrounding Baker's future, since the manager's contract expires at the end of this season.

Of course, Magowan didn't do much to quiet the talk himself.

Magowan elaborated at length Saturday on several subjects, offering extensive replies on all things Giants. But when asked whether he felt comfortable moving forward with Baker as manager next season, Magowan only could offer a terse, one-word reply.

    ``Sure,'' he said.

Magowan did say Baker ``managed beautifully'' in the playoffs, that he outmanaged ``two of the best managers in baseball, Bobby Cox
Bobby Cox (born May 21 1941 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA) is the current and longtime manager of the Atlanta Braves, and a former third baseman in Major League Baseball. He first led the Braves from 1978 to 1981, and then managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982 to 1985.
and Tony La Russa,'' and that the Giants achieved their goal of winning a playoff series, something they failed to do in 1997 and 2000. But such success was expected to a degree; Magowan challenged the team in spring training to take a step forward, and he also expanded the payroll to the point where the Giants won't turn a profit, he said, for the first time in the three years of Pacific Bell Park.

Magowan also is a little tired of it always being about Dusty and Barry, or Barry and Dusty.

``(Dusty) deserves what's being written about him,'' Magowan said. ``But the Giants are more than that. Last year, we were the only National League team with three All-Stars. This year, our catcher was an All-Star. Our first baseman is a six-time Gold Glove winner, the second baseman second baseman

``My point is, it's a good team. I think the players are an unwritten story. The general manager who acquired them is an unwritten story. The fans who produce the revenue to let us do this are an unwritten story. I like to see Dusty and Barry get the credit they deserve. It's richly deserved. But others deserve it, too.''

While the Angels expect a placid offseason, the Giants' will be anything but, and it will get interesting hours after the final pitch of the World Series. General manager Brian Sabean's contract also expires, and Magowan said he anticipates the GM situation will be resolved ``a day or two after our last game'' and the manager situation ``a week after that.''

--Shawon in waiting: Much has been made of Bonds' first appearance in the World Series, but Shawon Dunston
Shawon Donnell Dunston (born March 21 1963 in Brooklyn, New York) is a former shortstop and right-handed batter in Major League Baseball. He was the first overall pick in the 1982 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs, and played for the Cubs (1985-95, 1997), San Francisco Giants
actually has waited longer. Dunston, who broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1985, is on his third stint with the Giants and was under consideration to get the start in Game 1 at designated hitter designated hitter

. But Baker opted to go with Tsuyoshi Shinjo Tsuyoshi Shinjo (新庄 剛志 Shinjō Tsuyoshi , meaning Dunston's Series debut had to wait.

Dunston said Baker told him he'd be under consideration for DH starts in Game 2 and, if necessary Game 6 and Game 7.

``It's not about me,'' Dunston said. ``It's a collection of 25 guys, and I'm happy to be here. If I don't play, I don't play. A lot of players would like to be in my position, coming off the bench in the World Series.''

--Status quo: Baker made no changes to his postseason roster, retaining three left-handed relievers - Chad Zerbe, Aaron Fultz and Scott Eyre - because of the Angels' collection of left-handed hitters. Baker considered adding first baseman Damon Minor, who has had some success at the designated-hitter spot, but opted to go with more versatile players.
