straight man, delivering a performance that was as invisible as it was brilliant because the more celebrated, more decorated Maddux was delivering one for the ages.

This time, the Dodgers had no Maddux to steal Schmidt's glory, and this time, the Dodgers had no answer for the San Francisco right-hander's dominance.

The result was another masterpiece for Schmidt and another loss for the Dodgers, this one 7-3 to the Giants before a sellout crowd of 42,862 on Friday night at AT&T Park.

It was their second consecutive defeat after winning 17 of their previous 18 games.

And given that it was staff ace and National League All-Star Brad Penny's turn to pitch, who could really blame him?

Maddux had skated through eight innings on an unheard-of 68 pitches in Sunday night's nationally televised duel at Dodger Stadium     [  - a game when Schmidt countered with eight shutout innings of his own but got nothing to show for it when Dodgers catcher Russell Martin

But Penny never came close to matching Maddux's performance, or even imitating it. He gave up six runs in six innings, four of them on two-run homers by the light-hitting Omar Vizquel Omar Enrique Vizquel (born April 24, 1967 in Caracas, Venezuela) is a Major League Baseball shortstop playing for the San Francisco Giants. That put the Dodgers in a five-run hole they weren't about to crawl out of against the untouchable untouchable

 Schmidt.

As such, this one was essentially over in the bottom of the second inning, when Eliezer Alfonzo's sacrifice fly to medium-depth right field scored Hillenbrand to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.

From there, Schmidt simply threw strikes and cruised. He allowed only five Dodgers batters to reach base after a first inning in which Nomar Garciaparra's right-side grounder scored Rafael Furcal to put the Dodgers briefly in front 1-0.

That lead proved to be an illusion. And against Schmid (10-7), who went 7 1/3 innings before issuing two walks, so did the Dodgers offense.

Their last, best hope came in the third inning, when they still trailed by a single run and managed to get a pair of lucky infield singles with two outs.

That brought up J.D. Drew, whose airmailed throw back to the infield on Alfonzo's sacrifice fly the previous inning had landed on the infield grass between the mound and first base and trickled until someone picked it up.

Drew, batting in the cleanup spot, whiffed on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. Drew got another chance in the eighth after the Dodgers loaded the bases on three walks, the last one by Chulk. But all Drew could muster was a sacrifice fly to right-center, bringing Repko home with a fairly meaningless run.

Jeff Kent singled in Kenny Lofton to make it 6-3, ending Chulk's night and bringing Andre Ethier to the plate as the potential tying run against Mike Stanton. But Ethier flied out just short of the track in right field to end the inning.

Dodgers reliever Elmer Dessens, facing his first batter since coming off the disabled list, then gave up a solo homer to Steve Finley leading off the bottom of the inning Noun 1. bottom of the inning - the second half of an inning; while the home team is at bat

The division-leading Dodgers (64-58) were fortunate enough to maintain their three-game N.L. West lead over San Diego and Arizona after the Padres beat the Diamondbacks at Petco Park. The Dodgers will play three games against each of those clubs before returning home from their current trip.

The Giants crept within five of the lead, moving into a fourth-place tie with Colorado.

Penny (13-6), who began the day tied for the N.L. lead in victories, retired the first four batters he faced with little difficulty.

But Moises Alou blooped a single into right field with one out in the second, and Hillenbrand followed with a double to the leftfield corner, kicking off an evening when he would fall a triple short of the cycle.
