GIANT FOOD ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST STORE IN DELAWARE

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Giant Food Inc. (AMEX: GFS.A), a Washington-based food-drug chain of 155 units, today announced that it will begin construction this summer of its first store in the state of Delaware. This is the highlight of a 375,000 net square foot expansion program in the coming year, which includes six new stores and four store expansions.
The Delaware store, a 61,000 square foot food-drug unit will be located in the Eden Square Shopping Center at U.S. 40 and Delaware Route 1 in Bear, a suburb of Wilmington. Giant expects the store to be open in the spring of 1994 and is actively pursuing at least two other locations in New Castle County.
Giant President Pete Manos said, "We are excited about the opportunity to expand our services into a new area, and we feel that this store, along with the other locations that will open in the next 18 months, demonstrates Giant's commitment to growth."
The company will open two new food-drug stores in April and will begin construction on three additional food-drug units within the next several months.
Opening in April will be Giant's largest store, a 68,500 square foot replacement food-drug store in Beltway Plaza Shopping Center, Greenbelt, Md., and a 61,500 square foot food-drug store in Upper Marlboro, Md.
Construction will begin on a 61,000 square foot food-drug store in the Kentlands Shopping Center in Gaithersburg, Md; a 58,300 square foot food-drug store in the North Point Village Center in Reston, Va.; and a 61,000 square foot food-drug store in the Cascades Town Center in Loudon County, Va. GFS Realty, Giant's real estate arm, will be developing and managing the major core of the retail segment of the Cascades Town Center. It will be known as the Market Place, and will have approximately 200,000 square feet of retail space.
Giant will also be enlarging four food-drug stores as part of major remodelings. The store in White Oak, Md., will grow by about 3,400 square feet; the store in Lutherville, Md., will be enlarged by about 13,000 square feet; the store in the Cardinal Forest Shopping Center in Springfield, Va. by about 5,100 square feet; and the store at Route 40 and Rolling Road in Baltimore by 4,000 square feet.
Of Giant's current 155 supermarkets, 109 are food-drug stores. The company also operates three free-standing drug stores.
