GIANT EAGLE, XEROX TEAM UP TO SELL HOME-OFFICE SUPPLIES THROUGH PENNSYLVANIA SUPERMARKETS

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Shoppers at Giant Eagle stores in greater Pittsburgh will be among the first in the nation to see Xerox home-office supplies in supermarkets. In a joint announcement, Giant Eagle, Inc. and Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today launched a specially designed supermarket aisle section that provides easy access to high- use, home-office supplies. Called the Xerox Document Center, the theme- based section features a new line of Xerox Office Basics, including copier and fax paper, envelopes, computer diskettes, filing supplies, writing pads and binders. Xerox Document Centers will appear in eight Giant Eagle stores, effective immediately. Plans call for expanding the centers to additional stores over time.
Giant Eagle, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is comprised of 130 corporate and independently owned grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
"We're bringing a new level of convenience to customers who need high-quality home office supplies," said Giant Eagle spokesman John Learish. "This initiative puts us at the forefront of a significant trend in the workplace. For the first time, home-office supplies and groceries are available in a single stop."
The Xerox Document Center is designed to tap a growing market brought about by changing work habits that will create offices in nearly half of all American homes by 1995, according to Robert G. Baker, vice president, Xerox Supplies Marketing and Sales.
"The home office market represents an important and underserved market for document supplies," Baker noted. "With the Xerox Document Center, we are broadening our product line and putting Xerox quality supplies within easy reach of millions of customers. We are pleased to expand this program with Giant Eagle."
The first Xerox Document Center was unveiled this summer in Western New York State. The centers quickly expanded to supermarkets throughout Kansas. Xerox-brand home office supplies will be made available to additional supermarket chains in major U.S. markets in coming months.
Supplies at the Xerox Document Center are packaged in quantities tailored to meet the needs of home offices. Supermarkets typically sell business envelopes in quantities of 50 to 100, while office supplies superstores sell in bulk of 500 or more. The Xerox Document Center will offer 250 business envelopes per package -- a quantity specifically designed for the home office.
The Xerox Document Center initiative is managed by Signature Corporation, Marlton, N.J., a privately held supplies acquisition and distribution firm in which Xerox holds a minority interest.
