Paul Getty Trust is the world's wealthiest art institution with an estimated endowment of $5.8 billion. Based in Los Angeles, it operates two museums: the J. Paul Getty Museum in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Malibu, California. agreed Tuesday to a new operational partnership to conserve and promote the cultural heritage of developing countries. For most of its 51-year history, the Washington, D.C.-based institution has promoted growth in emerging nations primarily through projects in areas like agriculture, health care, education, water supply and telecommunications. ``Historically, the World Bank and a lot of others have tended to think of sustainable development Sustainable development is a socio-ecological process characterized by the fulfilment of human needs while maintaining the quality of the natural environment indefinitely. The linkage between environment and development was globally recognized in 1980, when the International Union in social and economic terms, and this really amounts to a redefinition of what sustainable development is,'' Williams said in an interview. ``You really can't have sustainable development without recognizing the cultural heritage of a country.'' Under terms of the agreement, the World Bank will supply loans and financial guidance to support conservation of, and education about, various cultural heritage projects around the world. The Getty and its five affiliated institutes, particularly its Conservation and Research institutes, will contribute arts and preservation expertise to World Bank-assisted projects. The new initiative coincides with a recent surge in cultural tourism and ``eco-tourism'' among countries with limited other resources. Williams credited Wolfensohn's personal interest in the arts and culture with cementing the partnership.
